Named for their musical shape, banjo clocks were patented in 1802 and were as popular through the first half of the 19th century as they are with collectors today. This Italian weather station is made in the same old-fashioned style and features a thermometer with both Fahrenheit and Celsius readings, a clock with Roman numeral face, and a hygrometer to measure humidity.

Made in Florence, Italy. One AA battery, not included. 5 7/8"W x 17 3/4"H x 1 1/2"D.

The Tuscan city of Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, attracting millions of tourists each year with its top notch art and architecture. World-renowned as the birthplace of the Renaissance, home to Brunelleschi’s dome, Giotto’s Campanile, and the Uffizi Gallery, founded by members of the Medici dynasty.

When the Arno River flooded in 1966, many art treasures were damaged. National Geographic sent researchers, journalists, and photographers to document the damage and the remarkable clean-up and restoration efforts. “Firenza bella. Beautiful Florence, the mother country of Western man,” wrote Joseph Judge in the July 1967 issue. “It is fair to say that much of what we know today of painting and sculpture, or architecture and political science, of scientific method and economic theory, we owe to the artists, politicians, statesmen, bankers, and merchants of the Renaissance—that explosion of intellectual and artistic energy in Italy between 1300 and 1600. And Florentines stood at the turbulent center of the Renaissance.”

Get what you pay for. There is a reason it is marked down from 139 to 35. Exact same issues as the other reviewer. Expected a lot better from NG. Wish I had read the one review but now hope two identical will get someone else's attention before they buy.

Wow, I was really disappointed in this clock. I've spent a lot of time in Europe and have seen many of these hygrometer/thermometer combos. I was expecting something of the same quality, but this wasn't even close. The clock and hygrometer are made of cheap, flimsy plastic with a thin "metal" rim coating. Worst of all, in order to put the AA battery into the clock, I had to take the clock out of the wooden banjo frame (it pops right out). Once the battery was installed I couldn't fit the clock back into the frame. I didn't want to force it because I felt like the clock would break too easily. So I'm returning it to Nat Geo. It's too bad because I really wanted to say something nice about this clock, it looks so pretty in the catalog and the examples I've seen in Europe are outstanding.
