Balinese silversmith Wayan Sarjana comes from a family of craftsmen, and after years of apprenticeship, now runs his own home workshop near the craft market of his island village. Sarjana elaborates on ancient Indonesian designs to evoke a historical and mystical mood in his jeweled creation. Floral scrolls frame a faceted amethyst center in this exquisite sterling silver bracelet.

Handmade in Indonesia. Approximately 1''W x 6''L.

One of the most striking members of the quartz family, violet hued amethyst has a place in traditions and beliefs of cultures from ancient Israel to modern day Tibet. Ancient Greek folk belief held that if one drank wine from an amethyst cup, it would prevent intoxication, and in many cultures it represents purity, clarity of mind, and chastity. A favorite of royalty, England's early 18th-century Queen Charlotte had a world famous amethyst bracelet and Russian empress Catherine the Great employed thousands of miners to extract the gem from Russia's Ural Mountains, which still yields some of the finest examples. In Tibetan Buddhism, amethyst rosaries are believed to enhance focus and inspire clear-sighted intelligence, an essential state of mind for those pursuing enlightenment.

Under the tutelage of his uncle, Wayan Sarjana has fine-tuned his silversmithing skills to become one of the most talented and innovative craftsmen in his village. Sarjana, an amateur historiographer, returns to his roots for inspiration. He elaborates on ancient Indonesian designs to create elegantly unique silver jewelry.

"I was born in a village called Banjar Apuan Singapadu, Sukawati on the island of Bali. I am the eldest of three children from a family of artists, but I was the first in my family to work with silver.

"I started to learn at the age of fifteen as an apprentice in my village with a man called Nyoman Regig. He was a good but strict teacher. If I made one piece just a little bit wrong he would be so angry with me, but he also taught me how to work under stress and short time limits. A good foundation if you ask me!

"After five years I started on my own to produce original pieces that I sold to local shops. And slowly I was able to save enough money to make my own workshop at home, where I work still until this day.

"My main inspirations come from nature and the daily life around me. Flowers and animals are my favorite subjects, but sometimes-abstract geometrical shapes come into my mind, even though they are inspired strongly by nature originally."

      Comments about Balinese Amethyst Cuff:

Bought as a February (birth stone) gift for my adult daughter. She was delighted with the detail & the weight - not flimsy, but not too heavy either. Quite the find! I am always pleased with the quality of the products available at NatGeo.

The braclet is beautiful. The only pictures in the catalog and online show a top view of the braclet. When I received the braclet, I was disappointed when I viewed it from the side. The housing of the stone, raises above the braclet almost a 1/4 of an inch. The rest of the braclet looks really nice, a tad smaller in real life. Sad to say I will be returning the braclet.

That’s exactly what the artisans of this stunningly simple bracelet do. Currently anchored in Bali—“the morning of the world,” they call it—they work with local artisans to carve and buff natural cow’s horn into a handsome cuff bracelet. Its graceful curve is pierced with two rows of brass studs, complementing the rich grain of the horn.

The floral motifs on our sterling silver and bronze cuff bracelet are inspired by Balinese carved woordwork. The Balinese are known for their handcarved furniture and architectural decorations featuring natural motifs, a custom that this jewelry pays tribute to. Traditionally, Balinese carvers choose auspicious days on their religious calendar to begin a new piece and often ask a priest for a blessing before starting to carve. This cuff honors the Balinese dediation to nature and spirtuality in handicraft.

Indonesian artisans have been practicing jewelry-making since the Bronze Age, almost 5,000 years ago. Today the island of Bali is especially known for its sterling silver and gemstones. Here, blue topaz and amethyst mimic the colors of the sunset over Tanah Lot temple, one of the island’s holiest sites.

Artisans in Tennessee use slices of amethyst-centered stalactites mined in Uruguay to create a necklace that's a one-of-a-kind conversation piece. Stalactites are dripstones that form on the roof of limestone caves, as water drips and minerals build up over thousands of years. The stone is edged with 18k-gold-plated copper and hangs from a necklace made of gold wire links.

Did you know that the name for the deep blue-green stone we call turquoise is actually based on misinformation? It’s from the French word for Turkish, because European traders found the stone at Turkish bazaars and assumed it was mined nearby, although what they found was most likely from present-day Iran. Nevertheless, Turkish jewelers are known for their inventive designs, as evidenced by the ornate treasures of the Ottoman Topkapi Palace.

The way of life among Thailand's northern hill tribes has changed little over the centuries. Traditionally, artisans melt silver bars and old necklaces to create new adornments for New Year celebrations, an example of which is this cuff of braided, intertwined strands of sterling silver. The artisan melts, cools, hammers, shapes, chisels, and engraves the sterling silver to achieve a braided and woven effect.

Silversmithing has a long and respected history on the Indonesian island of Bali, where the word pandai means both "smith" and "clever." Indonesia's early royal families were generous patrons of the arts, and many contemporary silversmiths have inherited hundreds of years of their ancestors' skills. A small group of Balinese artisans collaborate on the tiny granulated designs on these medallion earrings. Each is handcrafted from sterling silver and paired with a smooth onxy cabochon.
