Alpaca wool was originally reserved for Inca royalty because of its incredible softness and warmth. Today, a group of native artisans weaves this smooth, ample alpaca shawl using rustic hand looms and the same methods as their ancestors. The flowing, silky macramé fringe is knotted by hand in the tradition of the sophisticated wraps worn by indigenous Bolivian women.

100% alpaca wool with rayon fringe. Hand-loomed in Bolivia. 24"W x 70"L.

Dry clean.

Indigenous people in South America have raised alpaca for its fleece for thousands of years before Europeans learned about the animal and exported alpaca fiber to Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today this domesticated animal is bred throughout the world, but its native habitat is the Andean altiplano: Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia, and northern Chile.

Descended from the wild vicuña, alpaca resemble a cross between a llama and a sheep. Its fleece is similar to sheep's wool, but is usually softer, less prickly, and has minimal lanolin content, making it virtually hypoallergenic. Its extreme warmth, relatively light weight, and natural resistance to water make alpaca wool an ideal fabric for the frigid winters of the Andean altiplano. These qualities have also led to a rise in the use of alpaca fiber in outdoor gear and active wear, although it is also easily spun into a fine enough yarn for use in suits and other dress wear.

Most alpaca products can be treated as you would an object made of sheep's wool#151;hand wash using a mild soap and lukewarm water, or dry clean—but check the tag or manufacturer's instructions for specific instructions.

This shawl is one of the most beautiful shawls I have even purchased.

The fine details in the craft of the shawl are not visible in the photo. The color is a deep red, with beautiful stitching, and soft flowing fringes and an increased level of style.

Nicely presented in its own package, this is a must.

      Beautiful design but itchy material

The design and color of the wrap is very beautiful. But the wool is not very soft and itchy. When I tried to wrap the shawl around my neck, it was uncomfortably itchy.

Comments about Bolivian Macramé Alpaca Shawl:

I purchased this shawl on sale - which will be a gift to one of my friends next holiday season. Too bad I have to wait. It is beautifully made. The fabric is a soft, rich red (flattering for most). The macrame edging is amazing with stylishly fun "tassles."
This shawl has the potential to really dress up any outfit - while adding an extra layer of soft warmth. I'm becoming a big fan of alpaca!
I love that it's not a mass produced item, but rather made by local artisans in Boliva from a natural fiber.
Very cool gift to yourself or others. Would be great to see in a variety of colors.

I used it with my best dress to go out
I must buy a «little black dress» again to truely display this splendour
It is warm but just enough And so soft!
And the macrame is simply beauty-full (!)
Color: a bit dark Makes you look a bit older
would like it to tend toward flaminco red more than burgundy red Would be younger more alive color
All in all? «A thing of Beauty»! Nothing less

I love this wrap or shawl! It is great instead of a sweater or light jacket. The red is deep and lovely as opposed to bright or too orangey. It is well made and travels well....can easily dress up a plain outfit, too!

I purchased this item for myself. The photo doesn't do justice to the beauty and workmanship of the shaw. It's unlike any that I've seen in my social circles. Most want to touch it. The macrame and tassle ends are striking. The shaw conveniently stays where you put it, not constantly sliding. The weight of the finished ends hangs with purpose - well worth the price. I do wish it came in another color choice or two to wear in other seasons.

I'd been looking for a beautiful artisan red scarf/wrap for a long time. When saw this one in the NG catalog from Boliva I immediately purchased it. When I opened the box it took my breathe away, it was absolutely stunning in person! The red color is more of a burnt deep red- just lovely. The craftsmanship is exquisite with it's chevron weaving and silky complicated macraméd fringe. The texture of the alpaca wool is soft, warm and hearty for a life time of use. I've purchased many alpaca wool textiles from South America & have never been let down. This scarf/wrap is flawless & so versatile as a scarf, a wrap, a head wrap or a sash. It's also versatile enough to go from day wear to evening wear. A hearty staple in any womans wardrobe. Husbands, if you're reading this, this would make for an excellent gift for the special woman in your life- guaranteed!

This has to be one of the most useful(soft and warm) and beautiful scarves/shawls that I have had the pleasure to own--and that's coming from someone who owns over 20 scarves and shawls. It is simply incredible and even came in its own muslin storage bag.

Stained glass, vitrales in Spanish, is an important part of barocco mestizo style, the blend of Spanish and indigenous architecture found throughout Bolivia. Congregations that couldn’t afford true stained glass would mimic it with paint. The hand-shaped leaded outlines of these intricate windows are the inspiration for the pattern on our gray-green 100% alpaca crewneck sweater.

In Arequipa, Peru, the Casa del Moral, which houses an art collection and library, draws visitors with its architecture that combines Inca and Spanish colonial influences. Its name comes from the mulberry tree that stands in the courtyard. Artisans in Arequipa adapt some of Casa del Moral’s architectural details into this jacquard-knit baby alpaca sweater in shades of sky blue, smoky gray, and marigold.

Artisans in La Paz, Bolivia, chose the rich shades of superfine alpaca wool in this scarf to serve as a reminder of the Altiplano's summer colors during the cold Andean winters. Alpaca wool was once reserved exclusively for Inca royalty, but over the centuries the soft, lightweight, and antistatic, superfine fibers have become a staple of Andean textile tradition. Handwoven of 100% alpaca on simple looms in a contemporary plaid with hand-twisted fringe.

In traditional Aymara textiles, patterns like the ones on this alpaca sweater represented khunu, or snowfall, against the dark night sky. Artisans working in a Bolivian workshop hand-loom this pullover using superfine alpaca yarn in five different colors to represent the stars, sky, and fields on a winter night.

Indigenous Bolivian craftsman translate grecas—repeating geometric patterns—from the traditional garments of the Tarabuco region in this 3/4-zip pullover. The design is an interpretation of barroco mestizo style, in which indigenous and Spanish cultures have struck an aesthetic balance. This lightweight and cozy 100% alpaca sweater is handknit by artisans in Bolivia.

In the Bolivian high plains, amid the snowcapped Andes, the pre-Inca Tiwanaku culture thrived for more than 500 years. So far only a fraction of the civilization's ruins have been excavated, yet it has yielded some of the earliest and more remarkably well-preserved textiles found in the Americas. Their art features highly abstracted figures, that originally expressed real places, animals, or cultural events but over time became icons with symbolic meaning. The high degree of abstraction in the art of Tiwanaku has inspired several art historians to compare their art to modern abstract movements, including Cubism. The intricate, interlocked geometric patterns on this alpaca fiber sweater are adapted from woven Tiwanaku tunics made around 500 A.D.
