Just a couple of miles from the Mediterranean Sea, near the Cap Bon peninsula, lies the coastal town of Nabeul, Tunisia. This small city of less than 60,000 people is the center of Tunisia’s pottery trade, a tradition that extends 2,000 years back to the Roman era. Artisans working in a small studio in Nabeul pride themselves on hand-painting every element of their unique pieces.

Each piece is hand-formed from white clay, and then fired to create what’s known as a bisque. Finally, artisans hand-paint each plate in a different, coordinating pattern of blue and white glaze. The painting is entirely freehand, done without the use of decals or stencils. The 8" size is perfect as a salad plate or dessert plate and coordinates with all of the pieces in our other Tunisian pottery collection.

Handcrafted in Tunisia. 8 1/2" diameter.

Dishwasher- and microwave-safe. Not intended for freezer, oven, or stovetop.

Anyone fortunate enough to have traveled in North Africa can attest to how delicious the traditional tagine is. The base doubles as the serving dish, and removing the cone-shaped lid at the table always makes for a dramatic and mouth-watering presentation.

In the 1960s and ’70s, many Italian artists and designers found inspiration in expressionist and avant-garde painters like Paul Klee. This art historically inspired, hand-painted top draws the color palette of the 15th century into conversation with 20th-century abstraction.
