For sailors and ship captains, the lines and symbols of nautical charts reveal hidden dangers and unknown depths. For those of us on land, the charts are often more evocative than practical, sparking daydreams of rolling waves and beachfront relaxation. What better way, then, to enjoy summertime drinks on the porch or to escape into a book and a cup of tea, than by using this custom-made serving tray depicting the nautical map of your choice?

Provide us with your favorite U.S. town or landmark that is located on the coastline of the Atlantic or Pacific (including Alaska and Hawaii) or the Great Lakes, and artisans in New England will create a mango-wood tray featuring the nautical chart of your choice. Commemorate an Alaskan cruise, reminisce about a grandparents’ home on Lake Michigan, honor a family’s history of lobster fishing on Georges Bank… choose any coastal location that has special meaning for you.

Please note: To avoid errors and delays with your order, you must provide the name of a town or landmark that is located along a coastal waterway. Personalized items cannot be returned unless damaged or defective. Please check your order carefully; once placed, your order for this item cannot be canceled. Not available for shipment outside of the continental U.S. Allow 2-3 weeks for delivery.

Mango-wood and paper with a water-resistant laminate. 13 3/4" square x 2"H.

What is a nautical chart? Nautical charts are graphic displays of an ocean coastal area. They show depths of water, features of the seabed, details of the coastline, navigational hazards, and approaches to land. Scale can vary greatly.

Can I order a nautical chart of any body of water? Nautical charts are created for ocean coastal areas, but we do have charts for many larger rivers and lakes too. We will suggest other options if we don’t have a chart that fits your request.

Why do you need me to specify the nearest town? The nearest town can guide us to your specific waterway if we have multiple options or the waterway name is the same in a few states. For example:

  • The Pacific Ocean and Lake Michigan are too large to capture on one nautical chart. By specifying La Jolla, CA, or Chicago, IL, for example, we can create a chart focusing on where those bodies of water meet those cities.
  • If you request “Cape Cod Bay,” we can picture whole bay (as shown in the images above) or we can zoom in on the coastal town of Wellfleet, MA, for example.

Today we have two-way radio, satellite phones, and sophisticated GPS equipment, but in the 18th century, ships at sea communicated with each other via signal flags. Even with all our modern gear, sometimes low-tech is the way to go, and the flags are still used in conjunction with these newer communication technologies. Each flag stands for a letter and can be used to spell out words, but each flag also stands for a full message. For example the “C” flag can also mean “affirmative,” and the “U” flag can be a signal to an approaching ship that it is running into danger. The flags have still more meanings when used in yacht racing.

Although signal flags have been largely replaced by two-way radio and cell phones, in the 19th century they were how ships at sea communicated with each other. Each flag stands for a letter, but also represents a full message. For example, the “T” flag also meant “keep clear!” Today the flags are reserved for yacht racing and formal occasions. Choose your three-initial monogram and artisans in New England will create a coaster set on cork-backed, rustic tumbled marble that shows your initials along with the corresponding signal flags.

Conquering Spaniards brought the technique to the New World in the 15th century, where Peruvian artisans adapted it and made it a national art form.
