Inspired by the opulence of Italy's powerful Medici family, our bejeweled butterfly pin alights on a sweater or lapel for a touch of Renaissance luxury. The Medicis were a wealthy political dynasty who dominated Florence for centuries beginning in the 1300s, and their support of artists and architects paved the way for the Renaissance. A father and son jewelry-making studio in the northern city of Vicenza creates this golden butterfly—farfalla in Italian—using the lost-wax casting method.

Handcrafted in Vicenza, Italy. 18-karat gold-plated sterling silver with pearl, emerald, and ruby. 2"W x 1 1/4"H.

Renaissance meets Art Nouveau in these pearl and gemstone earrings. Art Nouveau flourished in Europe during the turn of the 20th century. Its streamlined, geometric shapes influenced everything from advertising to architecture, furniture to fashion. In Rome, an architect named Gino Coppede designed an entire neighborhood in the Art Nouveau style, right down to the street lamps. The "Quartiere Coppede" still looks much as it did when the architect died in 1927.

Through the 1700s, the main industry in the seaside town of Torre del Greco had been harvesting coral, or "red gold." When the ruins of nearby Pompeii were excavated, it became a must-see destination with England's elite. Cameos made from the shells harvested by local fishermen were one of the most popular souvenirs to show off one's well-traveled status. This romantic necklace pairs a rustic, hand-carved cameo portrait with a string of cultured pearls.

At the foot of Mount Vesuvius, just 10 miles south of Naples, lies the fishing town of Torre del Greco. Long known for their carved shell cameos, Torre del Greco jewelers also work with gold and gems, using time-honored techniques such as lost-wax casting. In lost-wax casting, a jeweler carves his or her design in wax, and then forms a mold around the model. When molten metal is poured into the mold, the wax melts away, leaving a perfect reproduction of the original model.
