Roman emperors commissioned thousands of different designs and denominations of coins, and people from Britain to Spain to Syria still turn up Roman coins while plowing their fields and digging in their gardens. For collectors, there's nothing more satisfying than pinpointing when an ancient bronze coin was first minted. The reproduction coins in our multistrand necklace depict an emperor on horseback under the words OPTIMO PRINCIPI, Latin for "highest prince." Several emperors used this title, but it's most often found on coins minted by the first-century emperor Trajan.

Our multistrand necklace features 18-karat gold-plated bronze coins along with glass beads, pearls, and faceted garnet stones in wine-red hues. The coins are made in a father and son jewelry studio in Vicenza, in northern Italy, using the lost-wax casting method. The coins and clasp are outlined in sterling silver for a two-tone look.

Handcrafted in Vicenza, Italy. 18-karat gold-plated sterling silver, garnet, pearls, and glass on steel cord. Inner length: 18 1/2" including clasp; outer length: 21". An additional 1" chain further adjusts the length up to 19 1/2" for the inner strand.
