The port city of Lasem, Indonesia, has been called Little Beijing because of its centuries of cultural exchange with China. The influence is seen in Lasem batik, which often incorporates Chinese symbols like dragons and lotus flowers. This lightly quilted jacket is hand-dyed in Lasem and reverses from lime green to aqua. Fully finished with pockets and mother-of-pearl buttons on both sides.

Made in Indonesia. 100% rayon. Women’s sizes S (4-6), M (8-10), L (12-14), XL (16-18).

Machine wash.

The wax-resist dyeing technique of batik has been found from Egypt to Mali and from India to Malaysia, as early as 2,000 years ago. The most exquisite batik comes from Indonesia, where the technique has evolved into high art over the past few centuries.

The most traditional form of batik begins with a needle-like object called a canting, through which melted wax flows as the artists uses it to draw a design or pattern on fabric. When the fabric is placed in a dye vat, the color will not permeate the areas that have been permeated with wax. For more complex patterns, this wax and dye process can be repeated with any number of dye colors. After the final dip into the dye vat, the fabric is hung to dry and the wax is dissolved in a solvent or melted away with a hot iron, revealing the previous layers of protected fabric as well as the crackling lines that are the hallmark of batik.

In the 20th century, Javanese batik artists developed a process by which batik could be executed more quickly, but still by hand. Now, a copper block is often used to transfer wax in a predetermined pattern over a larger area. While still most frequently found on fabric, batik can be done on paper, wood, or even ceramic.

Under the Balinese sun, artisans decorate lengths of fabric using a traditional batik technique developed in the coastal town of Lasem on the neighboring island of Java. Lasem is known for centuries of cross-cultural exchange and immigration with China, and bright red colors are typical of Lasem batik, as seen in this reversible jacket. Lightly quilted and fully finished with pockets and frog closures on both sides. Reverses to a rich aubergine (see online). Golden batik-dyed floral patterns grace both sides. Please accept slight variations due to the nature of the dyeing process.

Textile artists have practiced the wax-resist dyeing method known as batik for more than 2,000 years. Although forms of batik can be found from Egypt to Malaysia, the batik work of the Indonesian archipelago is especially fine. In fact, in 2009 UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as one of the "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity." With an ocean blue all-over leaf pattern, this handsome shirt showcases the skillful technique and visual boldness of Indonesian batik.

Intricately hand-tie-dyed textiles (called bandhani or bandhej) are a specialty of Gujarat in western India. Fabrics are pinched, pulled, and wrapped with thread before being dyed, creating patterns where the thread resists the color. Some of the best bandhani is found in Gujarat wedding saris. The vivid emerald and teal hues of this reversible, lightly quilted silk wrap jacket are the result of hours of dyeing to achieve the brightest possible colors. Please accept variations in the hand-dyed fabric.
