Tailors in Kathmandu, Nepal, create this all-purpose travel tunic in a flattering mid-thigh length, with tab-sleeve cuffs. Treadle-stitched details based on the traditional trapunto quilting worn by Kathmandu’s Gurung tribe decorate the pocket, back, and left bottom side. A blend of purple warp threads and magenta weft threads creates a deeper and more versatile color than in fabrics that are dyed after weaving.

Beautiful fabric. Perfect fit. Flattering color and length. Hides my fat stomach and still looks sophisticated. People were shocked that I ordered it from National Geographic.

          Comments about Nepalese Travel Tunic:

Fabulous garment; loose and comfortable, but not sloppy. Wider than it looks in the catalog - a good thing. Nice worn loose; belts well. Can't think of anything negative to say, except that I wish there were more of these, in other colourways - e.g. bluish purple, forest green.

I love this tunic. The purple and magenta woven threads are unique and create an unusual color cast in folds or creases. I have had many compliments on this blouse/tunic, with friends asking where I bought it.

Artisans working in Kathmandu, Nepal, use a traditional quilting technique called "trapunto" to add the detailing at the shoulders and yoke of this jacket. In trapunto, decorative patterns are sewn with lightweight batting to add texture without bulk. The artisans who make this jacket create the pattern freehand as they guide the garment through a treadle-operated sewing machine. Light enough to wear as a shirt or a jacket, it multiplies your travel wardrobe and helps you pack light. Hip length, with side welt pockets, turn-back cuffs, flattering princess seams, and an adjustable tie back.

Patola is a form of double-ikat weaving, meaning that both the warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads are dyed before being strung on the loom. This intricate process results in a bold pattern, often on a red background. It is practiced in many parts of Southeast Asia but is a particular specialty of Gujarat, where silk patola saris are often part of a bride’s trousseau.
