Athletes needed—apply at your local gymnasium. Do you have what it takes to represent Athens at the great games at Olympia? The ancient Greeks believed in training the mind and body together, so once you start your training you'll study grammar, music, citizenship, and philosophy. At the same time, you'll be expected to develop all of your athletic skills: boxing, running, wrestling, the long jump, and the pentathlon. Once every four years the great games at Olympia take place. If you're good enough, you'll join athletes from all over the Greek world for a month of special training. Athletes must work hard—there is no second or third place.

History is exciting and memorable in this creative nonfiction series that ''preps'' children for some of the most fascinating occupations throughout time. Each book features an original format that allows kids to identify with the given profession. Detailed illustrations bring the action to life. And engaging text challenges students to learn as much as they can as they prepare for a ''job interview'' at the end of the book.

All of the topics selected complement social studies curriculum in grades 3 to 6.

Some even reach a certain level of fame: The Ampato maiden sacrificed on an Andes peak; The Alpine Ice Man, the oldest frozen mummy ever found; England's 9,000-year-old Cheddar Man. Others' stories are known only to the ages, like a cache of elaborately adorned 7,000-year-old mummies unearthed in Chile, and the thousands of Egyptian mummies actually burned as train fuel in the 19th century. Modern science now allows us to explore these human treasures without destroying them, and connects us all to the secrets of Ancient Graves: Secrets of the Dead.
