The lion sculpture was a nice piece and a good addition to other Zimbabwe soapstone sculptures we already had. I gave this to my husband as a gift, and he was pleased. We both thought that the carving around the lion's mouth (teeth, etc.) was a little "rough" or unfinished looking, although the rest of the body was very nicely done.

Comments about Zimbabwe Lion Sculpture:

This lion statue was very inspiring and the ones that I gave as gifts (20) were all recieved with great appreciation. The symbol of the lion and it's roar as the statue depicts conveys a sense of courage and having no fear. I love the statue and what it represents.

      Comments about Zimbabwe Lion Sculpture:

My little lion is regal and adorable at the same time. The stone that he is carved out of is beautiful and very heavy. I also received a card with the name of the sculptor, so I named him after his creator! After seeing my lion, my mama decided to order one for herself!

          Chunky rather ugly lion sculpture

          Verified Buyer

          Comments about Zimbabwe Lion Sculpture:

it is a rather coarse carving which does not reflect the feline nature of the lion. It does not look like the photo, the lion's mane is huge and roughly cut, rather crude. it undermines the real beauty of the lion.

The picture on the website does not do justice to this piece. I found it much more detailed than I expected, the face especially. Good size, quite heavy and sturdy, won't break easily. Great gift for lovers of Africa.

Shona art, created by Zimbabwe's largest tribe, is one of the most significant art forms to come out of Africa in the 20th century. Family relationships, such as this pair, are often represented by the animal kingdom in Shona art. The artists believe that their chiseling and polishing releases the spirit form that is trapped within the rapoka stone. As each piece is one of a kind, please expect variation in the color and veining of the stone.

Shona is a 20th-century name given to a number of related ethnic groups in Zimbabwe. They speak similar dialects of a standardized Shona language, and many trace their ancestry back to the 12th-century capital city of Great Zimbabwe, whose ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today’s Shona stone carvers draw inspiration from those ancient builders and speak of releasing the spirit trapped in stone as they carve and polish with hand tools. Each handmade sculpture is unique, as is the raw, hand-quarried soapstone it emerged from; please accept variations.

The Swamp Pride is on its knees. Its mighty male was killed by poachers, leaving three mothers and their cubs defenseless in one of the toughest landscapes for a lion in Africa. Keeping cubs alive in the Busanga Swamp is hard work, but for these lionesses it has become even harder with two massive young male lions hunting them down. The males want to claim the Swamp Pride and its territory as their own, but to take over a pride they must kill its cubs. The mothers must fight tooth and claw to make sure that doesn’t happen.

After filming one of the most unusual attacks ever seen in the African savannah—four cheetahs being brutally attacked by two male lions—filmmaker Reinhard "Leo" Kuenkel joins forces with world-renowned lion expert Craig Packer to decipher what happened during this incredible take down, and more importantly, why it happened in the first place. They go frame by frame though the footage of the fight to break the details of the attack, and place them in the context of what they know about the way these animals act. Along the way, Kuenkel and Packer make some stunning revelations about the dark relationship between lions and cheetahs, and perhaps finally explain one of the last great African wildlife mysteries.
