Using a centuries-old technique, Bolivian families weave mantas—woolen textiles in geometric patterns—for bedding and apparel. Today, artisans frame vintage and contemporary mantas in durable hand-tooled leather to give them new life in these travel-friendly bags. The chocolate brown leather strap can be worn over one shoulder or unzipped to wear as a backpack, and the sides unsnap to expand capacity. Fully lined, with side, back, and inside zip pockets. As each manta is unique, color and pattern may vary.

Handmade by Bolivian artisans. 8 3/4''W x 11''H x 4 3/4''D.

Using a simple backstrap loom and centuries-old techniques, Bolivian families weave mantas—beautiful woolen textiles in geometric patterns. Common among pre-Inca and pre-conquest cultures such as the Aymara, some of the earliest mantas found in textile museum's collections date from 1400 A.D. Warm and durable, they are used as slings to carry infants and blankets for bedding. It can also be worn either on the back, like a cape, or over the back and arms, like a shawl. Mantas usually have a simple striped pattern, and can last for generations.

Like many indigenous art forms, fewer young people are learning how to weave, and the craft is in danger of losing its place in Andean culture. By finding new uses for mantas that increase the market and appreciation for these crafts more artisans are encouraged to continue the tradition. Today, exquisite vintage and contemporary woven mantas can be found as accents in leather bags, tailored jackets, and as culturally rich examples of indigenous art independent of their enduring practical use.

Comments about Bolivian Manta and Leather Backpack:

A very attractive and well made bag. It was loved by the person who received the gift. The leather was great quality and the fabric was beautifully made and well attached to the bag. The only con I could see was that it seemed a little difficult to get in to the bag because of the way it closes with the strap through the loop. Didn't seem to be a problem to the recipient, though.

Comments about Bolivian Manta and Leather Backpack:

I really liked the design of this bag, though I missed how small it was in the description (my oversight).

I would have kept the bag anyway, even though I would not have used it for my everyday bag as I had hoped, but it had a terrible chemical odor.

My parents also ordered one and found the exact same problem with theirs.

Comments about Bolivian Manta and Leather Backpack:

This is a wonderful purse with great versatility. It is well made and is different from anything out there. I love the way you just grab the handle and it forces the purse shut. Back and side zipped pockets gives you easy access to the essentials. Only objection is the fact that the leather scratches/marks easily. However, it adds to the charm of the purse.

Comments about Bolivian Manta and Leather Backpack:

My Manta bag just arrived today and I've been smiling since I opened the package. The coloring is amazing and I was not expecting the detail in the leather-work. The top opening may be a little awkward, but the rest of the bag more than compensates for a little (teensy) inconvenience. Great zip pockets, fits well over one shoulder or as a backpack. I'm going to have to wrap it and re-open on Christmas but I can't wait to start using this bag. I am already considering ordering another...

I've had this bag for about 3 years. It is my ONLY purse, I'm not one of those who changes purses with my outfit! I throw it on the car floor,on the bathroom floor, carry it in the rain and snow. It is finally starting to show wear on the piping and the outside zipper keeps springing open. I cant find another bag I like as well, so I'm going for another one.

[...] Colors were not to my liking, I was told on the phone I could not request dark coloring so what arrived was not to my satisfaction. Hard to manipulate top opening to find your wallet, etc. The side and back zipper compartments were quite nice. When converted to back pack, the straps are not adjustable to accomadate different outerware. I am afraid this bag is going back!

Jewelers on the island of Java work in open-air studios creating the sterling silver beads that have been a local art form since the 16th century. This bracelet begins with a technique called repoussé, where designs are hammered into a sheet of metal. The textured metal is then curled into a long cylindrical bead, and a mold is made. Sterling silver beads cast from this original mold are then slid onto a braided leather cord to make a handsome bracelet that flatters both men and women. Made in Indonesia.
