A husband-and-wife team knit this soft merino wool scarf in their County Clare studio. The purple patterns are adapted from ones found on entrance stones at the prehistoric monument of Newgrange on the eastern side of Ireland. The site is positioned so that light floods the entrance passage and central chamber on the winter solstice. Today, tens of thousands of visitors enter a lottery to be one of only 50 chosen to experience this ancient phenomenon each year.

    Comments about Newgrange Scarf:

This scarf might as well be cashmere; it is so soft. For all its lightness, it is densely knit and very toasty even on the coldest days. The colors are warm and rich, not glaring as some violet tones can be. In fact, the colors are well represented in the catalog photograph, unlike some other items at the National Geographic Store. The design is almost whimsical, though I know it is adapted from the patterns at New Grange. On a personal note, my paternal grandparents were born and raised in County Clare. Knowing this scarf is produced by a local couple there is just an added bonus for me. I highly recommend this scarf.

The iconic navy and white stripes of our Mariner Scarf is based on a pattern originally intended for deep sea fishermen in Breton, but that has since been adopted by seafarers and yachtsmen across the ages. It is based on the sweater originally worn by “marchand d’ail,” sellers of garlic and onions who sailed from Brittany to England with their wares. Eventually the French Navy adopted the tight-knit design, but only sailors and new recruits wore stripes—officers alone were permitted to wear solid colors.

Our handsome herringbone-patterned wool scarf is designed and woven by a husband-and-wife team in their County Clare workshop, using an antique Hattersley Domestic loom from the early 1900s. These narrow machines, made in Yorkshire, England, of cast-iron, leather, and wood, are especially suited to weaving scarves because they create two naturally reinforced selvedge edges, rather than the cut and sewn edges found on industrially woven scarves.
