Cultures on the Edge presents the photographic experience of Chris Rainier, National Geographic Society Fellow and cultural photographer, who has spent more than 30 years traveling the world in search of traditional cultures and natural wildernesses. From his experiences as Ansel Adams’ last photographic assistant, to being a photographer covering conflict and war, to a life’s mission to document the planet's vanishing cultures and wildernesses, Rainier has created a powerful and comprehensive documentary of cultures living on the edge of the powerful changes unfolding in the 21st century.
National Geographic Society Fellow Chris Rainier is one of the world’s leading documentary photographers. He has spent his career documenting endangered cultures and traditional language loss. In 2002 he was awarded the Lowell Thomas Award by the Explorers Club for his efforts on cultural preservation. During his tenure with National Geographic, he has been the co-founder and co-director of both the Enduring Voices Language Preservation Project and the All Roads Photography Program, designed to support indigenous groups desiring to document their own traditional languages and cultures. Rainier has completed photographic projects for the United Nations, UNESCO, Amnesty International, Conservation International, the Smithsonian Institution, Time magazine, and the New York Times.
