The Ragged Edge of Silence, by John Francis, author of Planetwalker, takes us to another level of appreciating, through silence, the beauty of the planet and our place in it. Francis's real and compelling prose forms a tapestry of questions and answers woven from interviews, stories, personal experience, science, and the power of silence through history, including practice by Native American, Hindu, and Buddhist cultures. Through their time-honored traditions and his own experience of communicating silently for 17 years, Francis's practical exercises lay the groundwork for the reader to build constructive silence into everyday life: to learn more about oneself, to set goals and accomplish dreams, to build strong relationships, and to appreciate and be a steward of the Earth. With its amazing human interest element and first-person expertise, this book is energizing and universally instructive.

Borobudur Cultured Pearl Earrings
Borobudur Cultured Pearl Earrings
(Based on 5 reviews)
Category: Jewelry/Earrings

There’s more than meets the eye in these delicate chandelier-style pearl earrings, which combine Greek, Buddhist, and Javanese influences. The “shoulder” from which the charms hang is adapted from Greek jewelry of the Hellenic era, about the 3rd to 1st century B.C. The intricate sterling silver patterns are inspired by images of the Buddha’s curled hair found at Bali’s famous Borobudur temple. The gentle sway of the three drops is reminiscent of the way characters move in Java’s ancient wayang kulit shadow puppet theater. A trio of cultured pearls, in pink, black, or white, are the finishing touch.

Tiwanaku Textiles Alpaca Sweater
Tiwanaku Textiles Alpaca Sweater
(Based on 14 reviews)
Category: Clothing/Men's Clothing/Sweaters

In the Bolivian high plains, amid the snowcapped Andes, the pre-Inca Tiwanaku culture thrived for more than 500 years. So far only a fraction of the civilization's ruins have been excavated, yet it has yielded some of the earliest and more remarkably well-preserved textiles found in the Americas. Their art features highly abstracted figures, that originally expressed real places, animals, or cultural events but over time became icons with symbolic meaning. The high degree of abstraction in the art of Tiwanaku has inspired several art historians to compare their art to modern abstract movements, including Cubism. The intricate, interlocked geometric patterns on this alpaca fiber sweater are adapted from woven Tiwanaku tunics made around 500 A.D.
