Jewelers on the island of Java work in open-air studios creating the sterling silver beads that have been a local art form since the 16th century. This bracelet begins with a technique called repoussé where designs are hammered into a sheet of metal. The textured metal is then curled into a long cylindrical bead, and a mold is made. Sterling silver beads cast from this original mold are then slid onto a braided leather cord to make a handsome bracelet that flatters both men and women. Made in Indonesia.

Comments about Women's Silver and Leather Bracelet:

I had wanted this bracelet for so long and what a huge disappointment it was when I received it! Many other commenters also state the same in regards to the thinness of the braid, clasp easy to break, etc. Mine may also have been defective as no where in the description overview does it say that the metal SS piece in the center moves around the braid which is not becoming at all, if that IS how it is supposed to be. The silver is thin and the clasp if constantly pinched to ensure that the bracelet stays on will cause the thin silver to eventually break. Mine also fell right off of my hand when I put it on only once. Not sure if these bracelets just run way too big. I feel badly as I have always wanted this as I have always supported National Geographic and its causes, and could not wait to get it in the mail.I also highly respect artisan pieces of jewelry, etc. I must have one that is defective as I would be appalled if this is what it IS supposed to be like! It is quite unfortunate that I have to send it back!

Comments about Women's Silver and Leather Bracelet:

I like this bracelet, however, would NOT buy again or recommend others buying. Too pricey for such a very thin piece of braided leather. In addition, the clasp had better be "pinched" together tightly or you WILL lose this bracelet (and it's not that easy to pinch together). Clasp for the price should be far more secure. Love the leather/silver combination, but bottom line is this bracelet is just not worth what it cost.

Connemara, in western Ireland, is home to the mottled green marble that's known as the country's national gem. The Walsh family, in Rathfarnham Village, Dublin, have been working with Connemara marble for three generations, and craft these stretchy beaded bracelets by hand. Each is paired with a sterling silver charm that reflects an element of Irish culture: a Celtic cross, a claddagh, and a shamrock.

Archaeologists have uncovered glass fragments from across the Roman Empire, from vases, vessels, even windowpanes. This asymmetrical cuff bracelet features two medallions of ancient glass excavated in Israel. The iridescent patina develops over 2,000 years of contact with moisture and minerals in the earth, and has made Roman glass popular with collectors for centuries. Comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Colombia’s traditional fashions are on full display during holidays and festivals, like the Carnival of Barranquilla, which marks the beginning of Lent. Women often wear skirts and blouses decked with handmade lace, a tradition that arrived with the Spanish in the 15th century. This seemingly delicate bracelet of vintage lace dipped in sterling silver speaks to the resilience of the Colombian people and the blending of cultural traditions.< /p>

Beginning with pure silver bullion, Lao silversmiths working in the capital city of Vientiane melt, flatten, hammer, and twist this traditional, flexible cuff bracelet into shape. The ends are decorated with a stylized Laotian flower called dok phikopun, which represents health and well-being.

The way of life among Thailand's northern hill tribes has changed little over the centuries. Traditionally, artisans melt silver bars and old necklaces to create new adornments for New Year celebrations, an example of which is this cuff of braided, intertwined strands of sterling silver. The artisan melts, cools, hammers, shapes, chisels, and engraves the sterling silver to achieve a braided and woven effect.

The Tuareg are a nomadic Berber tribe who live in the North African Sahara. They were once known as the Blue People of the Sahara because of the indigo-dyed turbans and veils that would stain their skin. They're known for their engraved silver jewelry; the Tuareg subclass called Inadan means people who work with fire and metal—blacksmiths. Using only simple hand tools and implements that could be easily transported on camels (screwdrivers, nails, safety pins, files, charcoal and handheld bellows) Tuareg craftsmen have plied their trade for centuries.

Jade has an ancient history in Mesoamerica, where it was used by cultures from the Olmec to the Maya to the Aztec. It symbolized life and death and was used to make figurines, jewelry, and even inlays for teeth. The Maya believed that a jade bead would provide passage through the underworld. Because conquering Spaniards were more interested in gold, the sources of ancient Mesoamerican jade were lost for hundreds of years. In 1998, Hurricane Mitch, one of the most powerful hurricanes in modern history, exposed boulder-size jade deposits near Xalapa, Mexico. Archaeologists now believe this location was a major source of jade for ancient civilizations. The simple designs of these hand-carved accents let the stone’s mottled colors take center stage. Handcrafted in family workshops in Antigua, Guatemala. Stone colors may vary.

Portugal first enacted laws protecting its cork forests, or montados, in 1209, centuries before ecological responsibility was a common goal. It takes 25 years for a cork oak to mature, after which it can be sustainably harvested for 150 years or more. Here, Portuguese artisans pair strips of cork with faux turquoise and silver-tone metal in a unisex style.

The floral motifs on our sterling silver and bronze cuff bracelet are inspired by Balinese carved woordwork. The Balinese are known for their handcarved furniture and architectural decorations featuring natural motifs, a custom that this jewelry pays tribute to. Traditionally, Balinese carvers choose auspicious days on their religious calendar to begin a new piece and often ask a priest for a blessing before starting to carve. This cuff honors the Balinese dediation to nature and spirtuality in handicraft.
