        Comments about Donegal Walking Sweater:

A gift for my son. It fit as expected and he plans to wear it in this year's St Patrick 's Day Parade. It's warm, but not itchy and looks good on him.

The walking sweater is a tradition in the British Isles that dates back more than a century. This classic outdoor style uses 100% Shetland wool fiber for its warmth and natural moisture-wicking properties. Built to withstand Scotland's vigorous, often fast-changing weather, it has suede patches at shoulders and elbows for durability and reduced wear and tear from backpacks or camera straps. Crafted in a 19th-century mill on the banks of the Teviot River, deep in the Scottish Borders.

Wool is lightweight and naturally water-resistant, and a touch of added cashmere makes this sweater supremely soft. The cable stitches are drawn from the rich textile vocabulary of the Aran Islands, and the heathered blue and gray wool is flecked with color in the style of traditional Donegal tweed.

Carried by Irish gentlemen for centuries, the shillelagh walking stick was often a symbol of a young man’s transition into adulthood. Since the mid-19th century, it has come to represent Irish craftsmanship and hospitality. The artisan who carves these blackthorn- and hazel-wood walking sticks in his County Cork home collects the branches on his daily walks through West Cork forests. Finished with a rubber tip for traction. Each is unique.

At the mouth of Galway Bay in western Ireland lie the three small islands that make up the Arans, Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inishneer. The ocean pummels the islands’ sheer cliffs, creating a landscape that Aran knitwear historian Alice Starmore calls “not surreal but simply magical.” It’s in this remote region that the stitches of classic Aran sweaters were invented and evolved.

In the Bolivian high plains, amid the snowcapped Andes, the pre-Inca Tiwanaku culture thrived for more than 500 years. So far only a fraction of the civilization's ruins have been excavated, yet it has yielded some of the earliest and more remarkably well-preserved textiles found in the Americas. Their art features highly abstracted figures, that originally expressed real places, animals, or cultural events but over time became icons with symbolic meaning. The high degree of abstraction in the art of Tiwanaku has inspired several art historians to compare their art to modern abstract movements, including Cubism. The intricate, interlocked geometric patterns on this alpaca fiber sweater are adapted from woven Tiwanaku tunics made around 500 A.D.

Its name comes from the mulberry tree that stands in the courtyard. In the northern British Isles, thick wool pullovers known as guernseys kept fishermen warm and dry during long runs at sea. Villages came to be known for particular knitting patterns like this one, originally named for the Yorkshire port of Whitby. Whitby sailors also worked fishing seasons in the Scottish port of Peterhead, and the style is sometimes called Buchanhaven after Peterhead’s small local fishing village. This classic nautical sweater is knit in Peterhead, Scotland, using virgin wool raised and spun in Yorkshire.
