In 1903 railroad engineer “Stormy” Kromer asked his wife to modify a baseball cap so it wouldn’t get whisked away when he leaned out into the wind. It was a hit with everyone on the Chicago & NorthWestern, and more than 100 years later it’s an American icon. The earflaps slide down for extra warmth.

Made in U.S.A. Recycled wool/nylon blend. Cotton lining. Available in sizes 7 1/4, 7 3/8, 7 1/2, 7 5/8.

Comments about Stormy Kromer Railroad Cap:

I bought two of these but had to return both because they were much too small. Not sure what happened; I measured my head as instructed and chose the right size, but they just didn't fit. Haven't gotten around to reordering in a larger size.

Comments about Stormy Kromer Railroad Cap:

This took me straight back to the railroad workers I saw in my little town where passing trains shook our house at night and the engineers would wave to us little kids at the crossing. I've given these hats to friends for deer hunting season so they are more visible and warm as well. The pull down ear cover is a great invention for keeping ears warm in the cold and windy north land. My husband will wear his black version when shoveling snow this winter. And I'll wear a red plaid one when I'm out photographing the holiday lights in the snow. And I feel good that it's made in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

In the shadow of the Bluestack Mountains in northwestern Ireland, the town of Donegal has been renowned for its handwoven wool tweed for generations. A skilled weaver, working at a bench loom, could make up to 30 yards of fabric in a day, using home-raised wool that was often dyed using natural and local materials including moss, yellow gorse, and blackberries. Today the town's largest manufacturer of wool tweed is the Magee, Molloy & McNutt factory, which presides over Donegal's town center in a large redbrick building. About 25 local craftsmen still work on hand looms in their homes, filling the demand for the bespoke look of a well-tailored tweed suit or cap. This classic herringbone-patterned hat is 100% wool and handcrafted in Ireland.

Here is the gripping account of the fever that swept the nation for four decades, culminating in the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point, Utah, in 1869. Through lively text, period paintings, and vintage photographs, Railroad Fever vividly recounts the struggle of the stalwart laborers, many of whom were Chinese immigrants; the intrusion into Native American lands and the resulting feuds; and the ultimate impact the railroad had on the geographic and economic complexion of America. With an engaging and visually appealing format, the story provides children with an accurate understanding of western expansion and the industrial revolution.

The Indian city of Madras, now called Chennai, has been home to a cotton textile industry for more than a millennium. During the era of British colonization, Scottish regiments were stationed in Madras, and mills began producing their traditional lightweight fabric in Scotland's iconic tartans. The plaid fabric became known by its city of origin, and Madras has been a summertime staple in Western fashion ever since.

Inspired by the wild weather of the Catlins region on the southern coast of New Zealand’s South Island, this rugged oilskin hat stands up wet and windy conditions. The water-resistant and durable oilskin is just as essential in this sparsely populated rainforest climate as it is for workers in the dry Australian Outback. Known as a scally cap or a cheese cutter cap (because of its wedge shape) in some parts of the world, this flat style has been worn since the 16th century.
