Silk swatches from vintage Japanese kimono are pieced together to create this elegant one-of-a-kind piece of cultural history. Each swatch carries with it the story of its former life—perhaps as a furisode that was worn to a wedding, or the shorter haori worn over a kimono. Harmonious patterns in shades of red are pieced together and trimmed with black silk. As these are made from vintage kimono, colors and patterns will vary. Most include shades of red, cranberry, and maroon; a few range to orange and apricot. Please see alternate product images for examples. Reverses to solid black silk.

Imported. 100% silk. Approximately 58"L x 10"W.

Dry-clean.

The ancient garment known as the sari has been a part of life on the Indian subcontinent for all of recorded history. Made using six yards of unstitched fabric, whether the finest indigo silk or the roughest clay-dyed cotton, the sari is a marvel of simplicity and beauty. This feather-light patchwork scarf is fashioned from vintage silk saris and comes in an array of brilliant jewel tones. Easy to wear and perfect to toss in your bag to dress up a travel outfit when it’s time to seek out a local café for dinner. Patterns will vary due to the vintage nature of the materials.

The Paracas culture flourished in present-day Peru from the seventh to the first century B.C. When archaeologists discovered the Great Paracas Necropolis on the Pacific coast in the 1920s, it included a remarkably preserved woven textile, colored with natural dyes, featuring winged supernatural figures. The geometric garments worn by those shamanic figures are the inspiration for our ultrasoft baby alpaca and silk scarf, which uses similar earth-toned colors.

Throughout Southeast Asia, the dupatta is one of the most versatile items in a woman’s wardrobe. The simple scarf can be worn over the head, draped around the neck, or folded over one shoulder. It accompanies saris, evening dresses, and suits alike. Our handwoven silk scarf is equally adaptable, and features a classic hand-screened paisley pattern in royal blue over an orange background.

Archaeologists call the period between 1475 and 1532 Peru’s Late Horizon. Most smaller civilizations had become part of the Inca Empire, which dominated the region in the pre-Columbian era. Architecture, ceramics, and textile arts flourished. The gold and red geometric pattern of this soft baby alpaca and silk scarf is inspired by a woven sling from the Late Horizon period.

When Kashmiri shawls first came to Europe from India in the 18th century, they were a perfect complement to women’s simple, neoclassic dress styles. A century later, large paisley patterns in neon colors were a hallmark of 1960s fashion. Our hand-printed silk scarf blends these two Western paisley crazes with a traditional pattern rendered in bright hues that evoke stained glass.

The designer who creates this lavish silk and cashmere-blend scarf draws inspiration from her collection of 250 antique, hand-carved wood printing blocks. For centuries, block-printed textiles have been a specialty of Indian artisans, especially in the northern part of the country. Here, rather than using the blocks as stamps in the traditional method, the designer traced some of her favorite patterns and created a serigraph of paisley and florals in azure hues. Made using an equal blend of silk and cashmere, the resulting scarf is supremely soft and drapes luxuriously.

Artisans in rural Thailand use silk left over from the making of ceremonial and festive clothing to create this one-of-a-kind yo-yo scarf. Each piece begins as a circle of fabric, which is hand-sewn into a three-dimensional “bud” and then connected edge to edge. No two scarves will be exactly alike.

Women in a textile workshop in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley take scraps of silk left from the production of saris and weave them into a uniquely textured yarn. Knit or crocheted, they transform what would otherwise be discarded into cozy winter accessories that brighten the dreariest days. This set is decorated with beads and traditional mirrorred disks that are intended to ward off the evil eye.

With a bold patchwork of color and echoes of past celebrations, this hand-stitched textile brings life to your home as a decorative bedspread, table cover, or wall hanging. Women in rural Bengal have long “upcycled” fabric from old cotton saris, using a rustic running stitch to create colorful quilts called kantha. This throw adapts that technique by using vintage pieces of silk saris—the truly special clothing that would have been worn for weddings, festivals, and holidays.

The Calico Museum in Ahmadabad houses India’s most important textile collection. The pattern of this silk-modal-blend tunic, called a kurta, is inspired by the museum’s early-19th-century printed fabrics made for trade with Europe. Hand-sewn pearlescent sequins add sparkle to the split V-neck design.

Boteh, mango leaf, even Welsh pear—the pattern most commonly known as paisley in the West goes by many different names. Knit by artisans in Arequipa, Peru, this pullover’s incredible softness comes from a blend of baby alpaca fiber and silk. The striped pattern and blue, brown, and gray hues are inspired by the terraced landscape of Machu Picchu. A local Quechua boy led Hiram Bingham to the site in 1911, and National Geographic research grantees explored and mapped the site over the next several years.
