Though many people know the biblical story of the legendary gifts of the Magi, told in the Gospel according to Matthew, few have experienced the extraordinary scent of frankincense and myrrh. These fragrant resins, used by ancient Greeks and Romans for medicinal and religious purposes, can be enjoyed on your evening fire or as incense. Our set of three mango-wood chests also contains the third gift of the Magi: gold. Here, delicate flakes of 23-karat gold are presented in a handblown glass ball. Comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Frankincense is from Boswellia sacra trees in the Dofar region of Oman. Myrrh is from Commiphora trees found throughout the Arabian Peninsula. The chests are made in India. Each chest is approximately 3 1/2"W x 3"H.

I kept the "Gift of Kings" for myself. However, it is also a lovely gift to give and it tells a beautiful story. I told the story to my Grandaughter about the three wise men taking the gifts to Jesus and showed her each gift as I was telling the story. Please, Please, Please bring this gift back for the next XMAS season.

In 1974, the vast burial chamber of third-century Chinese Emperor Qin Shi Huang was discovered by farmers in the north-central Shaanxi Province. It contained more than 7,000 life-size terra-cotta warriors. This set of four handcrafted miniature terra-cotta models of classic poses general, soldier, and archer arrives in a black silk gift box. The National Geographic Museum is sponsoring an exhibition of Qin warriors and other burial artifacts in fall 2009.

This chess set is a miniature model of the famous Isle of Lewis chessmen, a medieval set made mostly of walrus ivory. Historians believe the original set was carved in the 12th century in Norway, which then ruled the now Scottish Outer Hebrides islands, where the set was discovered in a sandbank in 1831. The resin and limestone-powder pieces store in the base.

Archaeologists have found Maya terracotta vessels and sculptures dating as far back as the 6th century, including the famed Jaina Island figurines. Artisan Roberto Perez draws on that ancient tradition when creating pieces like this terracotta tea set in his studio near Guatemala’s Lake Atitlán.

Egyptians are believed to be the first to incorporate fragrances and perfume into their cultural rituals, and intricate perfume bottles have been discovered within the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs. Our beautiful examples are hand-blown and shaped in Egypt using a technique that has been in use since the 13th century. Each is a unique creation accented with 24k gold, painted in delicate translucent colors, and finally topped with a sculpted leaf-shaped stopper. Fill them with perfumes or scented oils. No two are alike. Set of five.

One of the earliest mentions of chess in Italy is the story of an 11th-century Florentine clergyman who was reprimanded for staying up late playing the game in a “house of entertainment.” Today, chess sets are among the many crafts for which Florentine artisans are known. This set features hand-carved wooden pieces and a faux-leather board. Reverses to a backgammon board with resin pieces.

Bird raising in China dates back to the founding of the Qing dynasty in 1644. Members of the new elite class spent their time in teahouses showing off their birds with friends and learning about new and different species. These whimsical, brightly colored blown-glass ornaments celebrate that traditional love for small songbirds as well as the deeper mythological belief that birds are a link between heaven and Earth. 2 3/4''L.

National Geographic Channel’s groundbreaking series Great Migrations explores the massive movement of animal populations around the planet. The project chronicles these inspirational, often harrowing journeys that are marked by unforgiving odds, and what it means to move like your life depends on it. Wildebeests, zebras, red crabs, Mali elephants, walruses, monarch butterflies, jellyfish, and whale sharks will all be on display, and the production crew traveled some 420,000 miles, filming hundreds of stories in more than 20 countries. Using new science and technology, the series reveals how animals make death-defying journeys to survive. Great Migrations is the largest undertaking of its kind in the National Geographic Society’s 120-year history. The seven-hour miniseries premieres globally in fall 2010. National Geographic’s net proceeds support vital exploration, conservation, research, and education.
