The Silk Road through Southeast Asia to China transported more than just goods. Art and ideas also passed from region to region. Buddhism may have spread from India to China as early as the first century B.C., and on to Japan soon after. This Indian tunic, with a Japanese-inspired pattern, pays homage to the spirit of cross-cultural exchange.

              Comments about Silk Road Kurta:

Should have read other reviews more closely...this truly is not for you unless you are extremely tall and thin. I suspect the reason this is not pictured on a model is that it didn't even look good on them.

National Geo. should order sizes that can fit The American figure. We have a fuller figure. When we order an XL, we really expect it to fit an American size 18, and XXL size 18-20. Please in future have larger sizes made. We love shopping on this site, but become very disappointed when tunics are made too small. Thank you,

The purple color is pretty and the lightweight material is comfortable for the summer. I find the cut very narrow for me personally. It is long and the slits go up quite high. Recommended for someone tall and on the slimmer side.

                    Comments about Silk Road Kurta:

These Kurtas, I ordered the second color after I wore the lighter one for a while, offer casual elegance with greatest comfort .
I wear mine for going shopping, lunch dates with friends, dinners out.
I wear them at home, just to feel good. The drape of the material feels wonderful.
I do hand wash mine, though I don't know if it is necessary to do that. Just want to make sure I get the longest use out of them.
These tunic type tops are incredibly comfortable for most occasions.
Easy to dress up or down with accessories.

The design is much darker than shown. The accent design on sleeve and arm looks dark grey but is actually very black, not as elegant as the picture.
It is a still a nice lightweight summer 100% cotton top, but order a size or two smaller than you think to get the soft fluid kurta drape.
                          Had to return.

As early as the second century B.C., merchants were regularly using the interlocked trading routes across Asia, northern Africa, and Europe now known as the Silk Road. Chinese emperors tried to retain their monopoly on silk by keeping production methods secret, but it soon became a globally sought-after luxury good.

Traditional fabrics collected along a modern-day Silk Road journey are the inspiration for this luxurious, lightweight cardigan. On her travels between Persia (present-day Iran) and India, the designer of this silky-soft sweater searched through bazaars and vintage boutiques for examples of locally made fabrics. She used photo-editing software to scan the patterns and modify the colors to create a patchwork look that celebrates spring. Made using an equal blend of cashmere and silk, two of the softest, smoothest natural fabrics available—ones that have been traded along the Silk Road for centuries.

Kashmir has been at the crossroads of Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic culture for centuries, as people from Iran and Central Asia settled in the area. Today, India, China, and Pakistan all claim some part of this mountainous region. Our black embroidered wool shawl is inspired by one of Kashmir’s most widely prized traditions, the intricately woven paisley shawls that were first traded with Europe via the Silk Road.

The Calico Museum in Ahmadabad houses India’s most important textile collection. The pattern of this silk-modal-blend tunic, called a kurta, is inspired by the museum’s early-19th-century printed fabrics made for trade with Europe. Hand-sewn pearlescent sequins add sparkle to the split V-neck design.

Boteh, mango leaf, even Welsh pear—the pattern most commonly known as paisley in the West goes by many different names. The teardrop-shaped, abstract floral comes in infinite variations, and here they’re embroidered on a jacket made of raw silk. Features split sleeves that can be folded back. Fully lined.

Knit by artisans in Arequipa, Peru, this pullover’s incredible softness comes from a blend of baby alpaca fiber and silk. The striped pattern and blue, brown, and gray hues are inspired by the terraced landscape of Machu Picchu. A local Quechua boy led Hiram Bingham to the site in 1911, and National Geographic research grantees explored and mapped the site over the next several years.

Women in a textile workshop in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley take scraps of silk left from the production of saris and weave them into a uniquely textured yarn. Knit or crocheted, they transform what would otherwise be discarded into cozy winter accessories that brighten the dreariest days. This set is decorated with beads and traditional mirrorred disks that are intended to ward off the evil eye.

Silk saris get a second life in this innovative, handwoven jacket. Textile artisans in India use strips of vintage saris to form a loose basket-weave fabric. A typical sari can be anywhere from 10 to 30 feet long, so it’s a perfect source of vibrant fabric for up-cycled designs like this one. Colors may vary slightly as each jacket is individually made from hand-dyed fabric. Unlined. Front patch pockets.

Red cliffs and palm trees rise above a secluded stretch of sand at Varkala Beach on India’s southwestern coast. Locals also call it Papanasam Beach, which means “destroyer of sins,” and reflects the belief that a dip in the water can purify one’s soul. Our silk jacket is inspired by Varkala’s turquoise waters and calming spirit. It features hand-embroidered paisley and floral patterns on the front and back. Unlined. Knot buttons.

The designer who creates this lavish silk and cashmere-blend scarf draws inspiration from her collection of 250 antique, hand-carved wood printing blocks. For centuries, block-printed textiles have been a specialty of Indian artisans, especially in the northern part of the country. Here, rather than using the blocks as stamps in the traditional method, the designer traced some of her favorite patterns and created a serigraph of paisley and florals in azure hues. Made using an equal blend of silk and cashmere, the resulting scarf is supremely soft and drapes luxuriously.
