Flat carved disks called bi have been found in China dating back to the Neolithic period. They’re believed to symbolize a connection with the heavens, and they symbolized high rank. More recently, the design on the reverse of the medals given at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was based on bi disks. Here bi disks of smooth black onyx are paired with faceted carnelian and linked with silver-plated wires.

Handcrafted in China. Onyx and carnelian with silver-plated wire. 41 1/2"L.

Comments about Carnelian and Onyx Chinese Bi Necklace:

I liked the colors and the style shown in the catalog picture. However when I actually saw this necklace I was very disappointed in the quality and workmanship. I wish they had used little brass rings or something else to connect the stones instead of crudely twisted wire which is sharp and could snag on clothing. It is very cheaply made. Definitely not worth the money at all. I returned it.

Comments about Carnelian and Onyx Chinese Bi Necklace:

The photo does not do this necklace justice! What look like simply orange beads are actually a wide range of multi-colored stones that make this piece a multi-dimensional pallet of colors.

The Tuareg are a nomadic Berber tribe who live in the North African Sahara. They were once known as the Blue People of the Sahara because of the indigo-dyed turbans and veils that would stain their skin. They're known for their engraved silver jewelry; the Tuareg subclass called Inadan means people who work with fire and metal—blacksmiths. Using only simple hand tools and implements that could be easily transported on camels (screwdrivers, nails, safety pins, files, charcoal and handheld bellows) Tuareg craftsmen have plied their trade for centuries.

The image of a handwritten letter, folded and sealed with wax, perhaps handed to a valet or maid for delivery, is a common theme in depictions of the 19th century. Many people had seals engraved with their initials or family crest. This sterling silver necklace is cast from the impression of an antique seal that may have belonged to someone associated with seafaring. The design features an escalop, an emblem of safe travel. Leaping dolphins, regarded as guides, signify protection across the vast sea. And seagulls represent the welcoming sound of the shore after a long voyage.
