“Viking’s compass” and “water sapphire” are two nicknames for the violet gem iolite. Viking navigators used thin slices of the polarized stone as a lens through which to view the sun and set their course. Today it’s a common gift for 21st wedding anniversaries. It’s found throughout the world, but especially in India, where these hoop iolite earrings are handcrafted and faceted by Jaipur jewelers. 18-karat gold vermeil.

Comments about Water Sapphire Earrings:

The color of the gold is a beautiful contrast to the blue stones. The stones are tightly packed onto the earring and so the design is more "sturdy" than I expected. I thought it would have more movement in it. The size is described accurately, but they look a little smaller in person than I anticipated. Best worn with an open neck, scarves and sweaters get caught on the stones. I was very happy they came with backings, but they are difficult to place since the hoop is curved.

At the foot of Mount Vesuvius, just 10 miles south of Naples, lies the fishing town of Torre del Greco. Long known for their carved shell cameos, Torre del Greco jewelers also work with gold and gems, using time-honored techniques such as lost-wax casting. In lost-wax casting, a jeweler carves his or her design in wax, and then forms a mold around the model. When molten metal is poured into the mold, the wax melts away, leaving a perfect reproduction of the original model.

Renaissance meets Art Nouveau in these pearl and gemstone earrings. Art Nouveau flourished in Europe during the turn of the 20th century.
