Indian Cotton Embroidered Shirt
Indian Cotton Embroidered Shirt
(Based on 1 review)
Category: Clothing/Women's Clothing/Shirts

Lace-making is a relatively recent addition to the vast textile history of the Indian subcontinent. In the 1800s, especially in the eastern coastal Godavari regions, lace-making was introduced as way for poor women to earn an income while still being able to stay home and care for their families. The lace insets that grace the shoulders of this cotton shirt are exactly the type of embellishment that women were creating for export more than 200 years ago. The front is also hand- embroidered with floral patterns in white and ivory. Features tabbed 3/4-length sleeves and a relaxed Mandarin-style collar.

St. James Women's French Sailor Boatneck 3/4 Sleeve Cotton Shirt
St. James Women's French Sailor Boatneck 3/4 Sleeve Cotton Shirt
(Based on 2 reviews)
Category: Clothing/Women's Clothing/Shirts

The iconic navy and white stripes of our Women's French Sailor Boatneck shirt is based on a pattern originally intended for deep sea fishermen in Breton, but that has since been adopted by seafarers and yachtsmen across the ages. The sweaters were originally worn by “marchand d’ail,” sellers of garlic and onions who sailed from Brittany to England with their wares. Eventually the French Navy adopted the tight-knit wool design, but only sailors and new recruits wore stripes—officers alone were permitted to wear solid colors.

Chamula Cotton Shirt
Chamula Cotton Shirt

Category: Member Products/Apparel & Accessories

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was known for her eclectic wardrobe that featured traditional Zapotec blouses and skirts as well as pieces from northern Mexico, Guatemala, and beyond. Our cotton Mexican market-day outfit is inspired by that diversity, with a vivid pink blouse and black broomstick skirt made in the villages surrounding Oaxaca state on opposite sides of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Both the blouse and skirt are hand-dyed in Oaxaca. The semisheer broomstick skirt is ideal for travel—the wrinkles are part of the style. The blouse is embroidered in both Oaxaca and Chiapas by women using a geometric style named for the highland village of Chamula. It's relaxed, breezy style could be worn belted for a more fitted look. Together or as separates, these pieces reflect a flattering, breezy Mexican style that’s perfect for warm-weather exploring. Hues may vary slightly from those pictured because the cotton is hand-dyed.

Men's Guatemalan Ikat Shirt
Men's Guatemalan Ikat Shirt
(Based on 7 reviews)
Category: Clothing/Men's Clothing/Shirts

Ikat is a complex weaving style in which motifs are created not just on the loom but also before the threads are even dyed. For our rich blue cotton shirt, Guatemalan weavers begin by wrapping thick skeins of thread at intervals according to traditional family patterns. This tie-dyeing is what creates the range of blue and natural colors in our woven shirt. The technique is far more time-consuming and sophisticated than traditional plain, striped, or plaid weaves. Handwoven in Totonicapán, Guatemala.
