The Nicaraguan village of San Juan de Oriente is less than ten square blocks, and more than 80 percent of the families who live there are involved in making and selling pottery. Archaeological records suggest that local families once offered clay vessels full of food and drink to the spirit of the Masaya volcano three millennia ago. Because of this pottery tradition, the village was known as San Juan de los Platos—Saint John of the Platters—during the Spanish Conquest.

Potters throw the clay, using a kick wheel to build up the balloon-like shape. Then, they paint the vessel with mineral oxides and use tools fashioned out of bicycle spokes to carve designs in a style known as sgraffito, from the Italian word for "to scratch." The pots are baked in a wood-burning, beehive-shaped kiln, and finally they're polished to a high sheen. Please allow for slight variations as each piece is individually handcrafted.

Taking travelers around a city that he knows intimately, native Californian Jerry Dunn showcases San Francisco's many different neighborhoods in this National Geographic guide. The Financial District's skyscrapers shape the city's famous skyline, but it also contains gems bespeaking the past, including the Palace Hotel with its stained-glass-domed dining room, and the gold-rush buildings of Jackson Square. Next it's onto shop-filled Union Square and high-class Nob Hill, with its famous view from California Street overlooking the Bay Bridge. Dunn helps you find hidden temples and locally favorite restaurants in Chinatown, while Italian pizzazz, Beatnik memories, and magnificent scenery await in North Beach. Fisherman's Wharf is a crowd pleaser, with its stands of crabbers selling their daily catch and plenty of restaurants to sample the local fare. Here, too, you can embark on an adventure to Alcatraz.

The Seguso family of Murano, Italy, has been listed in that city’s census of master glassblowers since the 1300s. He became so enchanted with the country that he moved there, where his sons continue the family tradition. This substantial Murano glass vase is inspired by the colorful energy of Carnival in the Segusos’ adopted country.
