Comments about World's Last Great Places Islands DVD:

Galapagos part was OK, gruesome in parts appeared older than expected. There are better, more recent Galapagos DVDs available The real disappointment was the Madagascar documentary. The focus of this documentary was an expedition to one particular part of Madagascar,Ankarana,. The photograph on the DVD cover is misleading, a completely different part of Madagascar in the South not covered by the film. The focus was on the expedition itself rather than on the wildlife. The filming and commentry seemed amateurish and dated.

National Geographic Channel’s groundbreaking series Great Migrations explores the massive movement of animal populations around the planet. The project chronicles these inspirational, often harrowing journeys that are marked by unforgiving odds, and what it means to move like your life depends on it. Wildebeests, zebras, red crabs, Mali elephants, walruses, monarch butterflies, jellyfish, and whale sharks will all be on display, and the production crew traveled some 420,000 miles, filming hundreds of stories in more than 20 countries. Using new science and technology, the series reveals how animals make death-defying journeys to survive. Great Migrations is the largest undertaking of its kind in the National Geographic Society’s 120-year history. The seven-hour miniseries premieres globally in fall 2010. National Geographic’s net proceeds support vital exploration, conservation, research, and education.

A puffing steam train climbs into the Himalayas, a rolling rumble echoes over the holy waters of the Ganges, an astonishing five million commuters rush daily through the Bombay Victoria Terminus—join National Geographic as we journey on one of the world's largest railways. Since 1853, India's railway has been a unifying force. Not only did it physically link distant regions, it also connected the myriad of castes, languages, and religions that comprise India. It's a rich history, riding the sumptuous Palace on Wheels through Rajasthan or the "toy train" to Darjiling, but sadly, the age of steam is dying. At the Black Beauty contest, the beloved steam engines are admired for the last time. From the driver in the steaming locomotive to the station master in the sleepy village, from the family traveling to a wedding to the commuters in the large cities, this great institution reflects the country itself. Many are the faces, and varied are the stories, on The Great Indian Railway.

Hammerheads school in enormous numbers. Coral reefs ripple with color by day but at night turn into killing grounds for packs of whitetip sharks. Pristine waters brim with tuna and dolphins in hot pursuit of clouds of fish. Isla del Coco, or Cocos Island, appears as a tiny dot on a map in the Pacific Ocean more than 300 miles off the coast of Costa Rica, and is home to one of the greatest concentrations of predators on the planet. Dive into this carnivorous crowd in Shark Island with marine ecologist Enric Sala and an international team of explorers and scientists. The team traverses hundreds of square miles of ocean in search of clues to explain why so many predators congregate here and why, just outside Cocos' protected waters, life largely disappears.

National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Enric Sala journeys to the Pitcairn islands to document life in the sea and on land with hopes of turning this ocean environment into a protected marine reserve. Sala is hoping that the same isolation that has kept Pitcairn's inhabitants so removed from the rest of the world may also have protected the population beneath the waves. This is exploration at its most extreme and isolated.

Follow the largest carnivore that walks the earth, the great Kodiak bear, down ancient feeding trails, up salmon-rich rivers—even into a den where a mother nurses her newborn cubs. You'll watch cubs learning to fish, bears gorging in berry-laden fields, and a remarkable scene of bears consuming a beached whale carcass. The setting is Alaska's Kodiak Island, where 4,000-foot mountains rise from hundreds of miles of jagged coastline. Today about 2,700 of these larger cousins of the well-known grizzly bear still thrive there. But change looms on the horizon. Portions of the island are open to development. Dramatic home videos of dangerous tourist/bear encounters capture the uneasy clashes of Kodiak's modern and natural worlds. Enjoy this rare look into the lives of the Giant Bears of Kodiak Island, produced and photographed by renowned wildlife filmmaker Wolfgang Bayer.
