Vibrant patches of silk sari fabric are assembled in this one-of-a-kind, reversible jacket. Crafted in Gujarat, in western India, where a double-ikat style of weaving called patola is a specialty of local artisans. The jacket’s shaping comes from a layer of lightweight quilting. Sari patches will vary; reverses to solid red.

Made in India. Silk with silk/poly blend lining. Women’s sizes S (4-6), M (8-10), L (12-14), XL (16-18).

Dry clean.

Ikat is a type of weaving where the pattern emerges according to how the warp and weft threads are dyed. The name comes from a Javanese word meaning "to tie or bind," and it refers to the process of coloring the threads. Bundles of cotton, silk, or wool are either tied or painted with wax according to predetermined patterns. When the bundles are dipped in dye, the wrapped areas resist the color— similar to tie-dye. The bundles may be dyed, rinsed, dried, and re-dyed multiple times.

Then, as the threads are woven, patterns emerge in precise blocks of color, or soft blended patterns. In double ikat, both the warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads are dyed, a process that takes great skill and planning to envision the final textile.

Although the word has Southeast Asian origins, ikat is common in South America, too, especially among pre-Columbian indigenous cultures. Guatemala especially is known for its double-ikat woven cotton, which is often created on manual back-strap looms. Uzbekistan in Central Asia is famous for intricate silk ikat weavings that came to Europe and Japan via Silk Road traders. Because of the great time and skill involved, the most complex ikat fabrics are traditional symbols of prestige and power.

Comments about Silk Sari Patch Jacket:

I usually wear Mediums. I purchased M and it was WAY too big. Exchanged for a Small which is still a little large through the shoulders, but just a tad snug through chest. Since it's an open fit, that shouldn't pose a problem. Otherwise, good. The colors are not standardized, so mine has significantly less deep blue and green in the patching than the model picture. Still, I have gotten several compliments on it on its first wearing.

Fabric is beautiful although some of the colors are a bit odd. Returned it because the fabric pieces, although the same size on each side of front opening, aren't aligned. Have to have one side of jacket lower than the other to line them up.

Comments about Silk Sari Patch Jacket:

I ordered this hoping to take it on a trip this spring. The small was too large for me (I usually wear petites but was hopeful). In addition, the colors in the photo appeared to be a true red but the colors in the jacket were more of a rusty red. It just was not as wonderful as I had hoped so back it went.

Comments about Silk Sari Patch Jacket:

I often like your jackets and sweaters and own at least one. But the sizing is too generous for Small (4-6). I just cannot wear them. You should consider adding an extra small size for those women who do wear a true size 4.

Silk saris get a second life in this innovative, handwoven jacket. Textile artisans in India use strips of vintage saris to form a loose basket-weave fabric. A typical sari can be anywhere from 10 to 30 feet long, so it’s a perfect source of vibrant fabric for up-cycled designs like this one. Colors may vary slightly as each jacket is individually made from hand-dyed fabric. Unlined. Front patch pockets.

The Calico Museum of Textiles in Ahmedabad houses India’s most significant collection of handcrafted textiles from the past five centuries. The block-printed pattern of this silk-blend jacket is inspired by 19th-century printed fabrics in the Calico’s collection. The lightly quilted style is fully reversible, with patch pockets on both sides. Reverses to purple with a tiny navy blue, allover floral pattern.

Intricately hand-tie-dyed textiles (called bandhani or bandhej) are a specialty of Gujarat in western India. Fabrics are pinched, pulled, and wrapped with thread before being dyed, creating patterns where the thread resists the color. Some of the best bandhani is found in Gujarat wedding saris. The vivid emerald and teal hues of this reversible, lightly quilted silk wrap jacket are the result of hours of dyeing to achieve the brightest possible colors. Please accept variations in the hand-dyed fabric.

Red cliffs and palm trees rise above a secluded stretch of sand at Varkala Beach on India’s southwestern coast. Locals also call it Papanasam Beach, which means “destroyer of sins,” and reflects the belief that a dip in the water can purify one’s soul. Our silk jacket is inspired by Varkala’s turquoise waters and calming spirit. It features hand-embroidered paisley and floral patterns on the front and back. Unlined. Knot buttons.

Fortunately our Himalayan Embroidered Silk Jacket requires no such arduous journey to appreciate its heavily embroidered fields of flowers. But when the thaw arrives in late spring, it reveals lush meadows carpeted with daisies, anemones, marigolds, and more, including several endangered and endemic species found nowhere else in the world. The lacy teardrop shape known as paisley originated in Persia and came to be closely associated with the work of Indian Kashmiri weavers. As trade between Asia and Europe expanded in the 18th century, demand for the pattern was so great that weavers in the town of Paisley, Scotland, created their own version of the design, giving the pattern its Western name. Incorporating these curved and leaflike paisley shapes, our jacket is handcrafted of 100% silk. Artisans working in India embellish each jacket by hand with embroidery and beadwork, guaranteeing that no two will be exactly alike. Fully lined.
