According to Chinese legend, pearls are the tears of dragons as they fight in the stormy sky. In reality, many of China’s pearls are harvested in freshwater rivers in the south. This dramatic strand of iridescent, dark pearls in shades ranging from copper to gunmetal to burgundy is inspired by the gem’s mythic origins.

One strand, hand-strung in China. No clasp. 56"L.

Unfortunately, the colour of the pearls is almost black on top of the fact that the shape is so rough that make it look like a string of little stones. Don't think that it's worth that money and wish that Nat Geo had paid attention to quality control on what it is selling. Very disappointing not just with the product but with Nat Geo Shop as well.

Comments about South China Pearl Necklace:

I bought this necklace for myself and am very disappointed in the quality. Many of the man-made beads have flat sides, sharp edges, and a metal disc visible in the center.

I had seen this product shown in your catalog for several years. I usually do not purchase from catalogs because items usually are a disappointment. NOT this time. I am very pleased with the quality, uniqueness, iridescent colors. The long length is very useable. Thank you

Make your way to Chiang Mai’s famous night bazaar, and you'll find yourself in the midst of a thriving world of quick sales, bright lights, and skilled artistry. Among the stalls selling clothing and DVDs, hundreds of craftspeople display their handmade wares under paper umbrellas and twinkling strings of lights. Drawn by the creative energy of the night market, many artisans keep studios nearby. One such studio is run by three young sisters, whose resemblance is so striking they’re often mistaken for triplets. In their small studio, the sisters designed and crafted this delicate pearl necklace, knotted on waxed linen and reminiscent of so many small birds perched in the branches of a tree.

From the Palazzo Reale in Turin to the Reggia di Caserta in the south, Italy’s former royal residences continue to inspire. These sweeping, baroque-style necklace is handcrafted in Italy using brass and freshwater pearls in a style inspired by Renaissance portraits found in the famous Uffizi Gallery, once headquarters of the Medici dynasty.

Through the 1700s, the main industry in the seaside town of Torre del Greco had been harvesting coral, or "red gold." When the ruins of nearby Pompeii were excavated, it became a must-see destination with England's elite. Cameos made from the shells harvested by local fishermen were one of the most popular souvenirs to show off one's well-traveled status. This romantic necklace pairs a rustic, hand-carved cameo portrait with a string of cultured pearls.

Pearls hold an important place in the mythology and folklore of cultures across the world and throughout time. For the Chinese, they were the tears of dragons fighting in the sky. For Buddhists, pearls are the jewel in the lotus, which grants all desires. This gleaming strand of pearls in shades of pink, gold, lavender, and white can be worn as long necklace or doubled.

Uncovered from ancient Roman archaeological sites in modern-day Israel, each fragment has been textured and colored by centuries of wind and weather. In the heart of Dublin, designers at a family-owned jewelry studio draw on the backdrop of their ancient city, founded in the 8th century, to create classic designs that incorporate classic Celtic motifs. These sterling silver and freshwater pearl accents feature a classic Celtic trinity knot, also called the triquetra. Found in ancient Celtic texts like the Book of Kells, it has also become a symbol of the Christian holy trinity. In Celtic tradition, it symbolizes strength and unity—the knot itself has no beginning or end. It can represent past, present, and future, or the stages of a woman's life according to Celtic lore: young woman, mother, and grandmother.

In Hawaiian culture, puka shell necklaces and flower leis are traditional gifts of welcome to visitors. They’re also believed to help ensure safe passage for travelers, especially those crossing the ocean. This freshwater pearl puka necklace is a delicate take on that generous tradition, and adds the aloha spirit to a classic strand of pearls. Accented with a green amethyst in the center, with gold vermeil spacer beads.

India's 17th-century Mughal rulers were great lovers of pearls, jewels, and gemstones. The rulers of Hyderabad were especially known for their love of pearls of all sizes. Portraits from that era show men and women alike decked in elaborate jewelry from head to toe. Our simplified version of a Mughal pearl necklace is inspired by those portraits, called miniatures. Handcrafted in Jaipur, it features pink and white pearls along with delicate faceted garnet, amethyst, and carnelian.

Jasper, a form of chalcedony, has been used since ancient times for everything from arrow tips to official carved seals to snuff bottles that were highly collectible in 19th- and early-20th-century China. This triple strand of green, reddish, and brown jasper beads is interrupted throughout by pearls, and is inspired by the beaded necklaces that were popular in the Mandarin court of the late 17th century.
