In the Andean Altiplano of Peru, artisans have been knitting with soft, lightweight alpaca fiber for centuries. Aymara and Quechua artisans in Peru use an alpaca blend to create a dark brown cardigan with a blue and turquoise pattern of asters flowing from the hem and sleeves. A single bloom graces the back of the sweater. Made entirely on hand looms, the sweater is embellished with hand-knit scalloping at the cuffs and hem, and hand-painted ceramic buttons. Light, soft, easily packable, and wrinkle resistant.

Handmade in Peru. 40% alpaca, 30% wool, 30% acrylic. Women’s sizes S (4-6), M (8-10), L (12-14), XL (16-18), XXL (20).

Hand-wash or dry clean.

Indigenous people in South America have raised alpaca for its fleece for thousands of years before Europeans learned about the animal and exported alpaca fiber to Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today this domesticated animal is bred throughout the world, but its native habitat is the Andean altiplano: Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia, and northern Chile.

Descended from the wild vicuña, alpaca resemble a cross between a llama and a sheep. Its fleece is similar to sheep's wool, but is usually softer, less prickly, and has minimal lanolin content, making it virtually hypoallergenic. Its extreme warmth, relatively light weight, and natural resistance to water make alpaca wool an ideal fabric for the frigid winters of the Andean altiplano. These qualities have also led to a rise in the use of alpaca fiber in outdoor gear and active wear, although it is also easily spun into a fine enough yarn for use in suits and other dress wear.

Most alpaca products can be treated as you would an object made of sheep's wool—hand wash using a mild soap and lukewarm water, or dry clean—but check the tag or manufacturer's instructions for specific instructions.

          Comments about Aster Alpaca Sweater:

The sweater was pretty but not for those who wear petite sizes. So I had to return it. One odd thing: the buttons were designed to color-cordinate with the sweater pattern; but the one of the accent colors on the buttons was orange, which clashed with the orchid color in the sweater…detracted from the overall look.

I love this sweater! I was surprised at how light it is yet it feels like it will be quite cozy when the weather cools down. Plus, the lightness means less bulk, always important if you're a layerer like me. One thing, the "pinks" are actually purples, but no worries, it is still a very attractive sweater--I may have to get it in the blue, as well.

Great in cold weather. Alpaca, particularly a thin sweater like this one, is good when it is a little warmer also. I am getting away from bulky sweaters so this one is perfect.

First, last December,I bought two different sweaters from National Geographic. Although, I already had sweaters, I was so excited to receive this one and when that happened, my expectations came true. The sweater looks beautiful and really unique.Against the background of brown appearance bright colorful blue flowers make the sweater so pretty. Azure (sky-blue)trim and with similar color little buttons lay great particular fashion to the sweater. I will wear this sweater when I want look so good. Thanks National Geographic for unique sweaters.

In Arequipa, Peru, the Casa del Moral, which houses an art collection and library, draws visitors with its architecture that combines Inca and Spanish colonial influences. Its name comes from the mulberry tree that stands in the courtyard. Artisans in Arequipa adapt some of Casa del Moral’s architectural details into this jacquard-knit baby alpaca sweater in shades of sky blue, smoky gray, and marigold.

Indigenous Bolivian craftsman translate grecas—repeating geometric patterns—from the traditional garments of the Tarabuco region in this 3/4-zip pullover. The design is an interpretation of barroco mestizo style, in which indigenous and Spanish cultures have struck an aesthetic balance. With its Mediterranean climate, high elevation, and strong winds, it’s not surprising that southeastern Bolivia’s Tarija region has a rich winemaking heritage. The earthy-hued stripes of our alpaca sweater are reminiscent of the rows upon rows of grapes that line these vineyards high in the Andean foothills. Handcrafted using alpaca yard from Bolivia and Peru. Features a quarter-zip collar.

This warm and lightweight alpaca sweater, named after the Aymara word for flower, combines Baroque patterns found in Jesuit churches with warm, earthy colors inspired by the Altiplano and dry valleys of Bolivia.

The 26-mile Camino Inca, or Inca Trail, to Machu Picchu passes through small settlements, Inca ruins, cloud forests, and alpine tundra. The colors of this superfine alpaca sweater are inspired by that trek: orange zigzags for the distant mountain views, yellowish green for the stones that pave the trail, blue for the Urubamba River and the Andean sky.

Stained glass, vitrales in Spanish, is an important part of barocco mestizo style, the blend of Spanish and indigenous architecture found throughout Bolivia. Congregations that couldn’t afford true stained glass would mimic it with paint. The hand-shaped leaded outlines of these intricate windows are the inspiration for the pattern on our gray-green 100% alpaca crewneck sweater.

In the Bolivian high plains, amid the snowcapped Andes, the pre-Inca Tiwanaku culture thrived for more than 500 years. So far only a fraction of the civilization's ruins have been excavated, yet it has yielded some of the earliest and more remarkably well-preserved textiles found in the Americas. Their art features highly abstracted figures, that originally expressed real places, animals, or cultural events but over time became icons with symbolic meaning. The high degree of abstraction in the art of Tiwanaku has inspired several art historians to compare their art to modern abstract movements, including Cubism. The intricate, interlocked geometric patterns on this alpaca fiber sweater are adapted from woven Tiwanaku tunics made around 500 A.D.

In traditional Aymara textiles, patterns like the ones on this alpaca sweater represented khunu, or snowfall, against the dark night sky. Artisans working in a Bolivian workshop hand-loom this pullover using superfine alpaca yarn in five different colors to represent the stars, sky, and fields on a winter night.
