History books traditionally depict the pre-Columbus Americas as a pristine wilderness where small native villages lived in harmony with nature. But scientific evidence tells us that America wasn't exactly a "New World," but a very old one whose inhabitants had built a vast infrastructure of cities, orchards, canals, and causeways. But after Columbus set foot in the Americas, an endless wave of explorers, conquistadors, and settlers arrived, and with each of their ships came a Noah's Ark of plants, animals—and disease. In the first 100 years of contact, entire civilizations were wiped out and the landscape was changed forever.

National Geographic embarks on an expedition into the mysterious world of ancient American history to shed a different light on the history of the Americas.

Bonus program: Columbus Landfall.

Comments about America Before Columbus DVD:

From the title I should have seen a documentary on AMERICA before Columbus. Instead a lot of information on Europe and America AFTER Columbus was what I saw. I expected to see a documentary only about the Americas and the inhabitants, fauna and flora. Though most of it was educational it was NOT what the title stated!
PS Don't show a donkey then call it a mule. Somebody wasn't paying attention with that detail. How many other details weren't correct?

Why did the film end with the white guy dropping coins into the black man's cup while the narrator speaks of the melting pot? Unnecessary.

Comments about America Before Columbus DVD:

This was so informative and have been telling everyone about this episode! Learned a great deal more than what I was taught in grade school! Learning about how Christopher Columbus' exploration was formed and finally granted by the Queen of Spain....then the voyage itself! I was most saddened when watching the destruction of our planets trees (which we still do til this day)! Explaining the transference of two different diseases (in my opinion are the combined precursor of todays cancers) and how global slavery came into existence.
What an amazing program and hope EVERYONE could see this in order to see the world as it truly was and its development into what it is today.

          Thank you National Geographic!!

It is said that money makes the world go round. But when it comes to cash, gold, diamonds or even bits of digital data, without the engines that power the world’s financial systems, the money machine would grind to a halt. National Geographic Channel and host Jake Ward of Popular Science magazine take you inside the vaults of some of the world’s largest and most secretive cash stashes. For more than 80 years, armored vehicles have navigated Manhattan’s narrow streets carrying millions and sometimes billions in gold deposits in and out of the central bank of the United States… the Federal Reserve Bank. Manhattan’s branch, one of 12 that make up the Federal Reserve System, is trusted to guard almost one-quarter of the world’s entire gold supply.

It may have been one of the most cataclysmic geologic events of the last 60 million years which shaped America as we know it today. The narrow, 400-mile-long Isthmus of Panama, once buried below the sea, rose up and connected North and South America. This new land bridge unleashed an astonishing animal encounter: Prehistoric predators and prey—each unique to their worlds—came face-to-face for the first time. An armor-plated ancestor of the armadillo. A saber-toothed marsupial. A horse-like creature with three-toed feet. Evolutionary history changed forever as animals from the continents clashed.
