        Doesn't work for 15-yr. old

        Comments about Jodphur Blue Tunic:

Regret the 3-star rating - mandated by NG posting requirements. Unfortunately, the size of this design didn't work for a "small" 15-yr. old - disproportinate to 15-yr. old's frame. Even prospect of a machineg washing in cold water/hot dryer for shrinking the cotton tunic holds no promise for success. Nor will my 15-yr. old "grow into" this item in long-term. 15-yr. old likes design, however, after contemplating this tunic for a couple of weeks.

Expand your travel wardrobe with this easy-care cotton tunic-and-skirt set, made as part of a cottage industry in the Indian city of Jaipur. The colors are inspired by the blue tiled fountains at Rambagh Palace, former home of the maharaja of Jaipur, where blue pottery techniques were once a guarded secret. The lightweight and loose-fitting no-iron crinkle fabric makes this ideal for pack-and-go travel, and the pieces are easy to wear as separates, too.

The Calico Museum in Ahmadabad houses India’s most important textile collection. The pattern of this silk-modal-blend tunic, called a kurta, is inspired by the museum’s early-19th-century printed fabrics made for trade with Europe. Hand-sewn pearlescent sequins add sparkle to the split V-neck design.

Bandhani is a tie-dyeing technique practiced mainly in western India. Intricate patterns are created by wrapping the fabric with string before dyeing it. Bandhani cloth is often used for women’s shawls, but here the technique is adapted for a silky trio of travel-ready garments. Made of a deep blue knit viscose rayon, these wrinkle-resistant separates drape beautifully and expand your travel wardrobe. The ankle-length skirt has an elastic waist and drawstring.

Artisans in India mimic traditional embroidery patterns by using wax-resist batik to create an ivory-hued design along the neckline, hem, and sleeves of this cotton-knit tunic. Butterflies also decorate the navy and turquoise tie-dyed background. Clear sequins add sparkle to a casual split-V-neck, 3/4-sleeve design.

During the 19th century, paisley shawls from India were all the rage in Europe and America. Later, in the early years of the 20th century, women who had inherited their grandmother’s heirloom shawls often refashioned the fabric into dresses and jackets more appropriate for the jazz age. This sheer butterfly-sleeve tunic is made in the same spirit of transformation, and updates a timeless paisley pattern in a contemporary style. Poly georgette with elastic ruching at the waist. Hits at mid-thigh. Camisole not included.

Indian textiles have been influencing world fashion for centuries. In the mid-19th century, women clamored for paisley patterns on Kashmiri shawls. In the mid-20th century, the peace-and-love generation popularized bold graphics and Nehru collars. This relaxed tunic updates a ’60s style with a pattern inspired by raindrops on a lake. Semisheer 100% cotton with a split V-neckline and side vents.

The South American Alstroemeria is a genus of brightly colored flowers known as the lily of the Incas. Popular in floral arrangements, the 120-some members of the Alstroemeria family have an interesting trait in that their leaves are upside-down—that is, they twist so that what we see as the top of the leaf is actually the leaf’s underside.

The Punjab region in northern India is brimming with highly creative artisans who make everything from ornate jewelry to detailed needlework bedding and fabric. This classic tunic represents those decorative arts with subtle tone-on-tone embroidery trimming the neck and cuffs and accented by a scattering of beads across the body and tiny bell buttons at the neckline. This embroidered tunic evolved from a typical Punjabi garment called a kameez, a loose cotton shirt with an airy quality to keep you cool. Made in India.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, printed chintz from India was so popular that England and France banned it before it put European mills out of business. This hand-printed cotton tunic features a traditional, tonal chintz pattern. Lightweight and perfect for layering.
