The Punjab region in northern India is brimming with highly creative artisans who make everything from ornate jewelry to detailed needlework bedding and fabric. This classic tunic represents those decorative arts with subtle tone-on-tone embroidery trimming the neck and cuffs and accented by a scattering of beads across the body and tiny bell buttons at the neckline. This embroidered tunic evolved from a typical Punjabi garment called a kameez, a loose cotton shirt with an airy quality to keep you cool. Made in India.

Out of the package, I noticed the turquoise color was a little darker and more muted than the photo on my monitor. Both a plus for me. It's not the typical teal at all, very lovely.

The material is indeed lightweight and wrinkles easily. It's impossible to wear straight from the wash, the embroidery puckered up but a light ironing with a spray of sizing had it looking good. If you're picky about wrinkles, don't buy!

The buttons are adorable little bells that don't jingle unless you shake them hard. The shirt came with about two dozen extra beads and an extra button.

The fit is roomy, the small fits more like a medium. Darts in the bodice help give it a little shape. The arm length is short but a little longer than a 3/4.

Lightweight enough to wear even on the hottest days and looks good with slim fit trousers or jeans.

This is my first order from National Geographic. It was disappointing to find the color is not sky blue as shown - more like a dull blue-green. The top has no curvature - just a baggy fit. Straight cut with no curve at the waist. Also, it is quite larger than the size mentioned. I will have to take it in at the waist. Returning would mean simply paying twice for shipping with any product to show for the cost! I will not order from this site any more!

Comments about Land of Five Rivers Embroidered Tunic:

I really enjoy this tunic. There are a couple things that I find tough - it's very thin material, so it wrinkles easily. I can work with that! Also, the little buttons are very stylish, and I wouldn't want anything different, BUT they are difficult to button and unbutton.

Overall, I really like the tunic and enjoy that it's so feminine.

Our embroidered tunic brings a burst of colorful flowers to your spring wardrobe. Artisans in a family-run Delhi workshop use nine shades of hand-dyed cotton thread to embroider flowers along the collar and sleeves of a traditional, split-V-neck cotton tunic. Yellow whipstitching along the cuffs and hem adds a finishing touch. Made in India.

Artisans in India mimic traditional embroidery patterns by using wax-resist batik to create an ivory-hued design along the neckline, hem, and sleeves of this cotton-knit tunic. Throughout India, Hindu festivals are accompanied by intricate rangoli—designs “painted” on the ground using rice, sand, even flower petals. These auspicious symbols are the inspiration for the embroidered designs on our black travel shirt. At the center of each medallion along the neckline is a small mirror, a traditional part of Diwali decorations in northwestern India. An ideal travel shirt, the soft knit resists wrinkles and drapes beautifully the moment it’s unpacked. Purple seams decorate the front and back.

The Calico Museum in Ahmadabad houses India’s most important textile collection.
