National Geographic joins with the American Red Cross, the U.S. Army, and the Boy and Girl Scouts to reveal the secrets of emergency survival—in any situation.

Beginning with the basics of survival, the book then focuses on how to survive in six of the world's most hazardous environments—from building a snow fort if you're lost in a blizzard, to surviving a rattlesnake bite in the desert, to navigating safely through the dense rainforest.

The manual also offers essential instructions for weathering eight different natural disasters, from hurricanes and tornadoes to earthquakes and forest fires, including a chapter on home-based survival. Plus, ten National Geographic explorers, photographers, and scientists candidly share their own near-death stories and how they lived to tell them.

Each chapter is full of detailed, custom-drawn illustrations that lay out how-tos in easy to follow steps. Bulleted lists, first-person stories, a glossary, cross-referencing, an appendix, and an index round out the reference features. With 200 color photographs and maps, and a durable, waterproof cover, this vital reference is a necessity for families, seniors, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who needs to know what to do in a real emergency situation.

    Comments about Complete Survival Manual:

The Complete Survival Manual is a great idea, but there are a number of places where the descriptive text needs illustrations to help the reader understand what is presented. For example, on page 114 "A-Frame Bed with Bamboo", a small illustration would help. Remember - not everyone who may need this manual will be experienced/competent/comfortable in the "wild".
On page 113, reference is made to a "Camel Hitch" in the Appendix (page 342), there is no "Camel Hitch" shown in the Appendix.
On page 145 under "The Humble Dandelion", the last paragraph is incomplete.
The manual needs a complete and careful editing, do not assume people know what you are talking about.
On the positive side there is a lot of very useful information presented.

A comprehensive illustrated reference about photography and the camera, this book combines how-to advice, knowledgeable commentary, and useful tips on how to take and look at photographs. Not just a how-to book, it is a how-does-it-work book, focusing on cameras, photographs, and photographers. Throughout, voices and photographs from the greatest of National Geographic photographers add authority to these pages. Chapters build from camera basics—like how a digital camera works, what different lenses do, and the definition of exposure—to advanced and specific techniques—such as taking the best family candids, underwater photography, or techniques for capturing fireworks on film. Every chapter includes a feature called "My Perspective," highlighting a National Geographic photographer and his or her work with a personal note on photography. Every chapter ends with a feature called "What Makes This Photograph Great?"—twelve different iconic National Geographic photographs are analyzed thoroughly for their subject matter, composition, lighting, and exposure—by James P. Blair, longtime National Geographic photographer. A fascinating illustrated timeline of photography places milestone moments in the developing technology and art of photography into historic context. With something for everyone, novice and experienced amateur alike, designed in such a way that a reader can dip in and out of page after page, this complete reference will become a family favorite, to which young and old will refer over and over for years to come.

They are some the toughest, most extreme survivalists that Alaska has to offer. Going head to head, eight men of a rare breed are about to take the ultimate test of survival in Arctic conditions that only National Geographic could inspire. Dropped in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness by bush plane, with only their raw, mountain-man ingenuity, they’ll navigate through treacherous glaciated river valleys, barren ridgelines, and high mountain peaks, battling hunger, hostile predators, and perilous weather conditions along the way. Like the original National Geographic explorers, for those who succeed there is no grand prize, just the well-fought pride of having conquered the grueling challenges that Mother Nature can throw at them. It's an epic competition series where the only prize is survival.

How To Survive the End of the World examines terrifying and scientifically plausible doomsday scenarios by exploring distinct, world-threatening events and the methods by which humanity would fight to survive against grim odds. Earth's climate exists because of a delicate balance of factors, but if just one of those factors is thrown out of whack, everything we know about the world could change very quickly. This installment of How to Survive the End of the World examines what might happen if this environmental balance shifts, causing disasters such as super tornadoes, gamma ray lightning, ball lightning, and a giant hurricane that consumes the globe.
