The Shona are a diverse people who live in parts of Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Mozambique. Known for their stone carving, many Shona artisans quarry their own rapoko soapstone, which they chisel and polish with hand tools. This graceful pair represent the endangered wattled crane, a symbol of longevity whose habitat in Zimbabwe and throughout Africa is dwindling. Please accept variations in coloring and carving as each is handmade and unique.

Approximately 4"W x 9"H x 3"D. 3 3/10 lbs.

Supporting traditional Zimbabwean art forms, like Shona stone carving, helps bring critical income to communities throughout this southern African nation. Once the prosperous "breadbasket of southern Africa," recent government actions have destroyed the agricultural industry that was the backbone of Zimbabwe's economy. The country currently has the highest inflation rate in the world, as well as the fastest shrinking economy, and unemployment is at 80%. Encouraging an international market for art and crafts exports enables those affected by the agricultural economy's collapse to support their families through the work of their own hands.

Comments about Small Shona Crane Sculpture:

I bought the pair as a housewarming gift for a friend. He kept the large one and gave me the small one. He said that the color varied too much from the small to the large and they didn't look quite right together. The color on the small one was a slate, olive green color as expected so I was happy with it. Not sure what his looked like.

Comments about Small Shona Crane Sculpture:

Bought as a gift for my girlfriend. She already has the giraffe ( fantastic! ) and the elephant ( nice ) sculptures. Wasn't sure which one to get. Thought the wing design on the shorter one was a bit awkward, so I went with the larger model.
Unfortunately when I received it, it didn't fit in her display cabinet ( barely ). Also the stone had a rusty colour in it which, although still nice, didn't quite fit a bird sculpture. So reluctantly I ordered the shorter bird.
What a surprise when I got it. It is gorgeous! The way the wing folds around the head looks just great, much better than in the picture in my opinion.
So my suggestion is, if you order this product ( which you should ), go for the smaller one.

Shona art, created by Zimbabwe's largest tribe, is one of the most significant art forms to come out of Africa in the 20th century. Family relationships, such as this pair, are often represented by the animal kingdom in Shona art. The artists believe that their chiseling and polishing releases the spirit form that is trapped within the rapoka stone. As each piece is one of a kind, please expect variation in the color and veining of the stone.

Shona is a 20th-century name given to a number of related ethnic groups in Zimbabwe. They speak similar dialects of a standardized Shona language, and many trace their ancestry back to the 12th-century capital city of Great Zimbabwe, whose ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today’s Shona stone carvers draw inspiration from those ancient builders and speak of releasing the spirit trapped in stone as they carve and polish with hand tools. Each handmade sculpture is unique, as is the raw, hand-quarried soapstone it emerged from; please accept variations.

The Kikuyu people live in the shadow of Mt. Kenya—known locally as Kirinyaga—the earthly resting place of the Kikuyu creator Ngai. In this striking piece, two figures, male and female, are carved from a single piece of solid wood, representing the Kikuyu’s traditional vision of fertility, wealth, and health. These bold figurines suggest the interconnected nature of the visible and invisible forces of the Kikuyu belief system. Each pair is handmade by female artisans working in a community-based organization dedicated to fair trade practices, sustainable livelihoods, and economic empowerment for the rural women of the Kikuyu tribe.

From the earliest pictographs of long-necked giants carved into the desert rock of the Sahara, the gentle giraffe has fascinated man. Hand-carved with an elegant formalism by the Zimbabwean artisans Cobban Chivasa and Victor Mahwehwe, these stunning giraffe sculptures express the peaceful grace of these improbable creatures. Each piece is carved from a single piece of olivewood—a non-endangered alternative to threatened indigenous hardwoods that ensures the long-term sustainability of traditional Zimbabwean woodcarving. Displayed in the home or workplace, alone or as a loving pair, these sculptures will remind you to seek out the beauty of the natural world.
