Supporting traditional Zimbabwean art forms, like Shona stone carving, helps bring critical income to communities throughout this southern African nation. Once the prosperous "breadbasket of southern Africa," recent government actions have destroyed the agricultural industry that was the backbone of Zimbabwe's economy. The country currently has the highest inflation rate in the world, as well as the fastest shrinking economy, and unemployment is at 80%. Encouraging an international market for art and crafts exports enables those affected by the agricultural economy's collapse to support their families through the work of their own hands.

Comments about Small Shona Crane Sculpture:

Bought as a gift for my girlfriend. She already has the giraffe ( fantastic! ) and the elephant ( nice ) sculptures. Wasn't sure which one to get. Thought the wing design on the shorter one was a bit awkward, so I went with the larger model.
Unfortunately when I received it, it didn't fit in her display cabinet ( barely ). Also the stone had a rusty colour in it which, although still nice, didn't quite fit a bird sculpture. So reluctantly I ordered the shorter bird.
What a surprise when I got it. It is gorgeous! The way the wing folds around the head looks just great, much better than in the picture in my opinion.
So my suggestion is, if you order this product ( which you should ), go for the smaller one.

Shona art, created by Zimbabwe's largest tribe, is one of the most significant art forms to come out of Africa in the 20th century. The artists believe that their chiseling and polishing releases the spirit form that is trapped within the rapoka stone. Shona Giraffe Sculpture
Shona Giraffe Sculpture

Shona is a 20th-century name given to a number of related ethnic groups in Zimbabwe. They speak similar dialects of a standardized Shona language, and many trace their ancestry back to the 12th-century capital city of Great Zimbabwe, whose ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today’s Shona stone carvers draw inspiration from those ancient builders and speak of releasing the spirit trapped in stone as they carve and polish with hand tools. Each handmade sculpture is unique, as is the raw, hand-quarried soapstone it emerged from; please accept variations.

One of Serbia’s most significant craft traditions are kilims, or flat woven rugs, made in the historic southeastern town of Pirot. They were a symbol of Serbian royalty in the early part of the 20th century, and they’re still used frequently at state functions. The geometric designs are so often imitated that they’ve been “trademarked” with a geographical indication, similar to the way that only sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France can truly be called champagne.
