As early as the second century B.C., merchants were regularly using the interlocked trading routes across Asia, northern Africa, and Europe now known as the Silk Road. Chinese emperors tried to retain their monopoly on silk by keeping production methods secret, but it soon became a globally sought-after luxury good.

This silk shirt is just one contemporary example of China’s still-thriving silk trade. The heavyweight fabric retains body heat when you’re cool but cools when you’re hot, making it an ideal layering piece for travel. Features a buttoned front pocket that lines up with the overall pattern for a more polished look, a square hem with vents, two rear pleats, and mother-of-pearl buttons.

Imported. 100% silk. Men’s sizes M (38-40), L (42-44), XL (46-48).

Can be machine-washed in cold water, but dry cleaning is recommended for best results.

Patola is a form of double-ikat weaving, meaning that both the warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads are dyed before being strung on the loom. This intricate process results in a bold pattern, often on a red background. It is practiced in many parts of Southeast Asia but is a particular specialty of Gujarat, where silk patola saris are often part of a bride’s trousseau.

Throughout India, Hindu festivals are accompanied by intricate rangoli—designs “painted” on the ground using rice, sand, even flower petals. These auspicious symbols are the inspiration for the embroidered designs on our black travel shirt. At the center of each medallion along the neckline is a small mirror, a traditional part of Diwali decorations in northwestern India. An ideal travel shirt, the soft knit resists wrinkles and drapes beautifully the moment it’s unpacked. Purple seams decorate the front and back.

Traditional fabrics collected along a modern-day Silk Road journey are the inspiration for this luxurious, lightweight cardigan. On her travels between Persia (present-day Iran) and India, the designer of this silky-soft sweater searched through bazaars and vintage boutiques for examples of locally made fabrics. She used photo-editing software to scan the patterns and modify the colors to create a patchwork look that celebrates spring. Made using an equal blend of cashmere and silk, two of the softest, smoothest natural fabrics available—ones that have been traded along the Silk Road for centuries.
