The art of reverse painting on glass was brought to Peru by settling Spaniards in the 15th century. Local artisans emulated the style found on mirrors and other Spanish household objects and, in time, added so much of their own inspiration that the technique became recognized as a Peruvian craft tradition. There are a dwindling number of Peruvian artists who still practice this unique and romantic art. Here the artisan captures the ethereal beauty of butterflies on the hinged lid of a handcrafted wooden jewelry box.

Handmade in Peru. Approximately 7 1/2"W x 2"H x 6"D.

I bought this as a Christmas gift, now I have to rush to find something else. The painting on this box looks like it was done by a 3rd grader at best. You can even see the tracing lines through the paint. I'm upset that a class act like NG would promote a product like this, especially at this price! Suitable only to hold crayons for a small child.

Comments about Peruvian Reverse-painted Butterfly Box:

This beautiful box is a birthday gift. It will be used as a jewelry box. The box itself is a "jewel". I am so glad that I have a choice to purchase such a beautiful gift at a reasonable price that is NOT factory made. In the future I will have to purchase one for myself. This gift is for my sister whose birthday is in May. She will be thrilled.

Comments about Peruvian Reverse-painted Butterfly Box:

For this price, I was expecting an elegant giftbox that I could use for a lovely bracelet I had purchased. My friend assumed it was a token child's gift and I had to agree. The bottom looks to be made of balsa wood and the item is very lightweight and flimsy.

In reverse-painted glass, the details of a design are applied first, followed by highlights, then backgrounds. When viewed from the opposite side, the effect is a rich and layered design. Conquering Spaniards brought the technique to the New World in the 15th century, where Peruvian artisans adapted it and made it a national art form. This divided tray is a perfect catchall for a hall table or vanity.

Popular during the Spanish colonial era in Peru, the art of reverse-glass painting dwindled until local artisans rediscovered it in the 1960s. Designs are painted on the back of glass—first the details and outlines, then highlights, then the background. Glass panels decorated with swirling floral motifs adorn this petite gold-painted wooden jewelry box.

At the height of the Inca empire, alpaca was reserved for the emperor and high-ranking officials. Today it's a versatile fiber used by everyone in items from blankets and baby carriers to sweaters and ponchos. Its light weight and naturally water-resistant properties make it perfect for travel.

By 1800, New England was the center of the world's whaling industry. Sailors spent long months at sea, and one of the ways they passed the time was creating scrimshaw—etched bones or tusks that were blackened with soot or tobacco to highlight the design. This contemporary scrimshaw box is made of water buffalo bone and reproduces a design that a sailor may have made for his sweetheart at home.

Talavera pottery combines centuries of Moorish tradition, Spanish technique, and Mexican skill. Artisans hand-mold this ceramic butterfly, which is allowed to dry in the sun before being painted with a bright white glaze. Then, its wings are decorated using a traditional color palette of blue, green, yellow, red, brown, and black glaze. The result is a vibrant sculpture made in the talavera style by a family-run studio in Dolores Hidalgo, Mexico. Comes ready to hang.

For thousands of years, Peruvian weavers have produced elaborate garments piece by piece on narrow looms. Rather than hiding the seams, the weavers often enhanced the garments with decorative stitches. Once a necessity, these stitches now become distinctive accents that give this red baby alpaca-blend cardigan a hand-embellished touch.

The monarch butterfly, one of the most seemingly delicate of all of nature's animals, proves to be one of the toughest in this reader. Making the yearly trip from the Northern United States and Canada to the Oyamel forest of Mexico is no easy task, and it takes five generations of butterflies in order to do so. Battling cold temperatures and the threat of starvation, these beautiful insects complete an almost 3,000 mile journey over the course of two months, only to have to turn and around and head back home.
