Handcrafted in Israel. 1 1/2"L.

Vermeil (ver-MAY) is a metal frequently used in jewlery where sterling silver is coated with gold. It was originally produced in France in the mid 18th century.

The material also gave the Vermeil Room in the White House its name. In 1958, First Lady Mamie Eisenhower had an elaborate gold vermeil (also called gilt silver) tableset, a gift from mining heiress Margaret Thompson Biddle, displayed in glass vitrines there.

Comments about Gold-vermeil Roman Glass Earrings:

I will wear them on a regular basis to compliment a Roman glass necklace I have that was purchased in Israel. Colors go nicely with nearly everything.
I do worry about the thinness of the glass. It is quite translucent and may damage easily.

Comments about Gold-vermeil Roman Glass Earrings:

I bought both the earrings and the necklace and returned them both for credit. The irridesent "dust" that the pieces were made of were beautiful shades of blues, greens and pinks but the "stones" flaked off when you touched them...i was expecting a more solid piece of glass not very minute fragments melded together. There was a warning not to get them wet so I could understand the reason once I saw how they were crafted. I took them to a friend who is a fine jeweler designer and craftman...she, too, thought they were a disappointment, especially from NG.

Roman glass and druzy agate: two unusual materials combine to form a truly conversation-starting necklace. Atlanta-based artist Mickey Lynn begins by sorting through fragments of 2,000-year-old Roman glass to find the best colors. After Roman craftsmen discovered glassblowing in the 1st century A.D., it became one of the most widely available materials in the Roman world. Today, aqua-colored fragments are abundant, their colors having developed over centuries of contact with the earth.

Many people are surprised to learn that glass was one of the most widely available materials in the ancient world. By the 1st century A.D., glassblowing techniques had been perfected to the point where household items like glass cups and vessels were common. Two thousand years later, fragments of this ancient glass are found throughout the lands of the former Roman Empire.

She pairs fragments of Roman-era glass with drops of moonstone, clear quartz, white agate, and gold-covered pyrite. The 2,000-year-old glass is authentic; fragments like these are abundant at archaeological sites throughout the vast territory of the former Roman Empire. Lynn gives these pieces of glass, which may have once been part of a wine glass or water jug, a new life as evocative pieces of jewelry. Streams of gold-plated chain connect this timeless collection of watery hues.

This picturesque landscape was first settled by the Etruscans, and our reproduction coin jewelry is inspired by their precise gold metalwork. Gold-plated, Etruscan medallions alternate with reproduction Roman-era coins treated with a verdigris patina to create a museum-worthy conversation piece.
