Cloisonné was developed thousands of years ago during the Byzantine era and traveled via the Silk Road to China, where it has flourished as an art form ever since. To create a design in cloisonné, an artist's original sketch must be traced using thin strips of wire. Into this wire "scaffolding" is inserted powdered enamel that, when baked, fills the outlines and creates a porcelain-like appearance.

Here cloisonné is used to create a set of miniature teapot ornaments, a nod to China’s long history as a tea-drinking culture. According to legend, the drink was accidentally discovered there in the third century B.C. when a tea leaf fell into Emperor Shennong’s water.

Handmade in Beijing, China. Each is 2 1/4"W x 1 1/4"H.

Comments about Cloisonné Teapot Ornaments - Set of 4:

Very cute. I'd bought them as a gift for my sister-in-law, but they're so cute, I may keep them for myself, and order her another set.

I love that they came in an easy-to-gift-wrap box of four and that each teapot is also in it's own tiny individual box. (sister-in-law, neice 1, neice 2, former sister-i-law.) One for each!

I bought 2 sets and shared them with my sisters, mother and dear tea-drinking friends. We all love them and will think of each other when we use/see the teapot that is ours.

In the Gikomba area of Nairobi, Kenya, men and women of the Kamba tribe carve these safari animal ornaments using hard olive wood. The men carve the rock-hard wood using hand tools, and the women paint the figures. These workers are known as jua kali, a Swahili phrase that means hot sun but has come to mean those who earn a living in Kenya's informal work sector, such as street vendors, repairmen, and artisans in woodworking or metal carving.

Although signal flags have been largely replaced by two-way radio and cell phones, in the 19th century they were how ships at sea communicated with each other. Each flag stands for a letter, but also represents a full message. For example, the “T” flag also meant “keep clear!” Today the flags are reserved for yacht racing and formal occasions. Choose your three-initial monogram and artisans in New England will create a coaster set on cork-backed, rustic tumbled marble that shows your initials along with the corresponding signal flags.

Early in the 20th century, people discovered how to induce the transformation of a grain of sand into an organic gem, the pearl. Since that time, the natural irregularities of baroque cultured pearls have been treasured by women all over the world. These cultured freshwater pearls are available in four jewel tones of bronze, garnet, peacock, and amethyst and are strung on generous elastic. Read more about pearls in the June 1997 National Geographic. Set of four contains one bracelet in each color.

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, when families gather to celebrate with lanterns, fireworks, and candles. In India's rural Kutch and Gujarat states, Diwali decorations often incorporate tiny slivers of mirror that cast glittering reflections. These traditional Diwali votives begin with lac—a resin that Gujarati women gather from trees and mold like clay. Before the lac hardens, beads and hand-cut mirrors are pressed into its surface. Replaceable tea-light candles included. Set of four. Handmade in India.
