This handwoven straw hat recalls the golden age of travel while offering extremely lightweight sun protection. Although woven toquilla palm hats are a 400-year-old Ecuadorian craft tradition, the world knows these as Panama hats. While President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Panama Canal in 1906, he was photographed wearing one, and they became globally popular. Toquilla palm is grown on Ecuador's west coast in villages accessible only by foot. A cottage industry of artisans harvests the palm and weaves it into these soft yet structured hats. Handmade by artisans in Ecuador. Brim width 3". Each hat is handwoven so brim width may vary.

Can be damp-ironed to remove wrinkles.

Comments about Handwoven Straw Hat:

I need a wide-brim hat for sun protection. The one in the picture has a wider brim than the one I received. I'd recommend this hat for somebody who doesn't need much protection from the sun.

      Comments about Handwoven Straw Hat:

I was shocked at how tiny this hat was (I ordered a large). It would barely fit a child. I returned it and bought a hat elsewhere so I could try it on.

            Comments about Handwoven Straw Hat:

I ordered this attractive hat for my husband using the size chart provided by NatGeo. The hat arrived and I was pleased with it except for the fact that it was too small. So, I sent it back for exchange. Three weeks after mail confirmation of arrival, I call NatGeo. They had no record of receiving it, but checked my delivery confirmation and processed a hat in a larger size. When we received the new hat it was crushed and one of the straws was broken. It was packed as though it had been shoved down in the box had air cushion packing filling the rest of the space. Undoubtedly, they must have expected that it may be damaged because there was a note instructing how to remove wrinkles using a damp cloth and iron. I did not order a MAKE A HAT KIT, but now I have one. I have already spent [$]to return the first hat that was ordered from a defective size chart. Should I spend another shipping fee and deal with their very slow service to possibly get another crushed hat that I will have to repair. Based on this experience, I will NEVER order from NatGeo again.

Craftspeople in Ecuador have made hats from the fibers of the flexible and durable toquilla palm tree for more than 400 years. Despite their origins, they're known as Panama hats because that's the port from which they were shipped to North America and Europe. This structured, pinched-crown Panama hat features a leather band and a fabric liner.

Sunburn can put a damper on any vacation, not to mention the long-term risks of sun damage, so smart travelers recommend wearing a wide-brimmed hat. But fitting one into limited baggage space without bending or folding it can be a challenge. Our Breezer Cotton Travel Hat solves that problem by being 100% crushable and packable. The nylon mesh crown springs back into shape after being flattened in luggage, and it allows breezes in for ventilation. A chin cord keeps the hat in place on windy days or on the water. SPF 30+ protection plus a 3” wide brim and a sweatband.

As far back as the early 19th century, U.S. and European travelers were sporting the summer-weight, woven palm hats we’ve come to know as Panama hats. Although they’ve always been traditionally made in Ecuador, they were shipped through the Isthmus of Panama, and became known by the country of export rather than their country of origin. California gold miners were among the first to sport these flexible, sun-blocking hats, and when President Theodore Roosevelt was pictured wearing one during a visit to the Panama Canal, the hat’s popularity exploded.
