Overview

Photographer Steve McCurry's 1984 portrait of an Afghan refugee girl with startling sea-green eyes is arguably the most famous image ever published by National Geographic. She remained anonymous until 2002 when McCurry returned to Afghanistan and, employing old-fashioned detective work as well as the FBI's cutting edge facial recoginition technology, was able to identify her as Sharbat Gula—17 years older but with the same haunting eyes.

In December 2012, through Christie's auction house, the National Geographic Society held its first-ever auction of 232 lots from our 11.5 million-image archive. "Afghan Girl" sold to an anonymous bidder for $147,000, three times the expected price. Now you can own a piece of photographic history with our framed reproduction, signed by the photographer. Comes in a wooden frame with black veneer and plexiglass front. 2" acid-free white mat. Please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery. Not available for shipment outside of the U.S.
