Polish artisans have more than 80 names to describe types of amber, from flame and honey to clouded and woolly. Often found along the Baltic Sea, amber has been popular in jewelry for centuries. Here, teardrops of honey amber are paired with sterling silver leaves in earrings that reflect an early-20th-century art deco style.

Handcrafted in Poland. 1 1/2"L.

Mined in Sicily, Burma, Romania, Poland, and Mexico, amber is actually the fossilized resin of ancient trees, and is among the oldest stones used for human adornment. It has been called the gold of the sea because the most extensive deposits are found along Baltic shores. The Greeks, to whom amber represented the tears Apollo shed as he was banished from Olympus, called amber "electron" because of its tendency to attract lightweight objects when rubbed.

I purchased these earrings as a gift for my mother-in-law for Christmas. I have always admired items in the National Geographic Catalogue, but this was my first purchase. These earrings stood out to me as a lovely item for a very good price. I was very impressed when they arrived, and they are just as lovely as the photograph. They seem well made, and my mother-in-law very much liked them when she opened her present.

The service was so fast my head spun! That was great. Products were packaged carefully. The box for the earrings was shameful and looked like it came from a Dollar General store. Was ashamed to give it to my daughter-in-law in that cheap paper box. The silver looks like plastic with silver paint, but otherwise they are beautiful. Expected a better box from Nat Geo.

I love amber and was thrilled to receive these as a gift, after mentioning that I would buy them for myself. It was as described. However, after about a year of only occasional wear, the amber fell off one of the earrings. Extremely upset!

Very cheap feeling. Amber is nice but the silver feels cheap and almost like silver plate.
          Not worth the price.
Very disappointed in Nat.G for carrying this.
          Felt ripped off.

These earings are beautiful, not for everday as they are quite large and hang down, but for occaisional use, they really get great compliments.

These earrings can be worn for dress up or casual ware. The Amber in the ones I purchased had insects and seeds in them and the honey color was beautiful. The silver deco design is perfect for the tear drop design of the Amber. They are light weight and the lenght of them are just right.

Amber has a long history in Pomerania, the parts of present-day Germany and Poland that border the Baltic Sea. It can still be found along beaches there, or be scooped out of the ocean as it floats along the waves. Pomeranian brides were often given amber beads as wedding gifts, because they were believed to be protective amulets. These hoop earrings feature authentic amber beads in alternating shades of honey and citrine, paired with sterling silver spacers. Because natural amber is so lightweight, they’re perfect for sensitive ears.

Turquoise is a powerful ritual material in Himalayan cultures, representing the clear blue of the sky. It is sometimes used as a gift to one’s betrothed, and the color is said to stay true as long as the lover’s affection does. This modern interpretation of a classic design features vibrant turquoise inlaid in sterling silver. Handmade in Nepal by members of the Shakya clan, descendants of an ancient culture that was traditionally known for its metalwork and whose capital was in present-day Nepal.

The hills of northern Thailand are home to about 20 distinct tribes, including the Hmong and the Karen. Each tribe has its own cultural traditions, but all the tribes are known for their silver jewelry, which many people use instead of paper money. Women wear their wealth in the form of collars, earrings, and bracelets. Our teardrop earrings are made in northern Thailand villages, in the spirit of hill-tribe craftsmanship. Made using white metal.

Renaissance meets Art Nouveau in these pearl and gemstone earrings. Art Nouveau flourished in Europe during the turn of the 20th century. Its streamlined, geometric shapes influenced everything from advertising to architecture, furniture to fashion. In Rome, an architect named Gino Coppede designed an entire neighborhood in the Art Nouveau style, right down to the street lamps. The "Quartiere Coppede" still looks much as it did when the architect died in 1927.

Along the coastline of the Baltic Sea, winter storms cast up pieces of amber from the seabed. Locals gather it from the shore like seashells, and since this natural gem floats in saltwater, it can be scooped from the water’s surface with a net. These simple accents showcase amber’s translucence and toffee hue, framed in oxidized sterling silver.

There in the region of Pomerania, amber beads are handed down through generations and are considered amulets against harm. In the early decades of the 20th century, art nouveau gave jewelers the opportunity to express themselves as artists. They drew inspiration from the natural world, especially the shapes of leaves and petals. These lightweight accents are stamped using 100-year-old molds from the art nouveau era. Made in France from “old silver,” or silver-plated copper, with blue Swarovski crystals.

Amber captivated ancient cultures long before its origins were understood. Some thought it was sunshine made solid. Others believed it was the fallen tears of the gods. It wasn’t until the Roman author Pliny wrote his Historia Naturalis in A.D. 77 that it was thought of as a plant material. As the fossilized resin of 40-million-year-old trees, amber is one of the only gems that isn’t a mineral. In Baltic cultures, it’s a traditional gift for a bride from her parents, and is passed down through generations of women. This necklace showcases smooth amber in a range of its natural, untreated hues, from milky honey white to opaque brown-black.

A cluster of rich gems makes a romantic accent in these Art Nouveau-inspired earrings. Jewelers in the seaside town of Torre del Greco combine cultured pearls, rubies, emeralds, carnelian, and agate in a sweeping arrangement. A pink resin rosette adds an old-fashioned touch. The gems are all set in 14-karat gold-plated sterling silver bezels.
