Versatile with lightweight warmth, this alpaca-blend cloak is great for travel in changeable climates. Modeled after the Andean ruana, a traditional style of draped cloak, its pattern of red and violet flowers is inspired by the wildlife of the Peruvian mountainside. The generous scarflike cowl neck and button front keep you warm when winds pick up, or on planes and indoors where the air-conditioning isn't under your control. One size fits most.

Handmade by artisans in Peru from a blend of alpaca, sheep's wool, and acrylic. Approximately 46"W x 32 1/2"L.

Hand-wash or dry clean.

Indigenous people in South America have raised alpaca for its fleece for thousands of years before Europeans learned about the animal and exported alpaca fiber to Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today this domesticated animal is bred throughout the world, but its native habitat is the Andean altiplano: Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia, and northern Chile.

Descended from the wild vicuña, alpaca resemble a cross between a llama and a sheep. Its fleece is similar to sheep's wool, but is usually softer, less prickly, and has minimal lanolin content, making it virtually hypoallergenic. Its extreme warmth, relatively light weight, and natural resistance to water make alpaca wool an ideal fabric for the frigid winters of the Andean altiplano. These qualities have also led to a rise in the use of alpaca fiber in outdoor gear and active wear, although it is also easily spun into a fine enough yarn for use in suits and other dress wear.

Most alpaca products can be treated as you would an object made of sheep's wool—hand wash using a mild soap and lukewarm water, or dry clean—but check the tag or manufacturer's instructions for specific guidelines.

This was my first clothing order. I bought this as I travel many times from a cold climate to a hot climate and wanted something I could wear on a plane that would not be bulky. This cloak worked perfectly. I am a little worried about it holding up when it is washed, but we will see. It was very comfortable to travel with and would recommend it to my friends

Archaeologists call the period between 1475 and 1532 Peru’s Late Horizon. Most smaller civilizations had become part of the Inca Empire, which dominated the region in the pre-Columbian era. Architecture, ceramics, and textile arts flourished. The gold and red geometric pattern of this soft baby alpaca and silk scarf is inspired by a woven sling from the Late Horizon period.

Terrace farming has been part of the Peruvian landscape since at least 900 b.c. It makes even the steep Andes farmable, which, scholars agree, contributed to the success of pre-Inca civilizations like the Chavín, Moche, and Huari. This ancient striped landscape of rock, soil, and crops is the inspiration behind our textured sweater.

The native doves of Peru appear much like their northern cousins, but when they take flight, their brilliant wing patches appear as shining crescents of bright white feathers. The doves’ call—coo-coo-lee—has earned this Peruvian bird the nickname cuculi. Inspired by this familiar but beautiful local bird, the long and lovely Peruvian Dove cardigan sweater wraps you in gossamer warmth. With a delicate and subtly asymmetrical grey and white pattern, the open collar can be pulled in close for a shawl-like effect, or worn open and loose for a dramatic and flattering drape. This superlight alpaca sweater is hand-finished in the Peruvian Andes by a company dedicated to supporting local Andean communities and craftsman.

Today, a group of native artisans weaves this smooth, ample alpaca shawl using rustic hand looms and the same methods as their ancestors. The flowing, silky macramé fringe is knotted by hand in the tradition of the sophisticated wraps worn by indigenous Bolivian women.
