National Geographic is home to a thoughtful selection of educational kids toys, games, activity kits, books, and more that engage young minds and foster a lifetime of discovery through fun and hands-on learning. The leading concept in 21st-century education is STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It’s a cross-disciplinary approach to learning that entrepreneurs and educators believe is key to a healthy innovation economy. At National Geographic we believe that art and design also play a vital role in exploration, so we count ourselves among those who take a broader view: from STEM to STEAM.

We’re proud to have been supporters of STEAM learning since long before the acronym was invented. Anyone who has watched a child open a present only to set the gift aside and play with the box knows that kids have an innate curiosity and desire to explore and understand their world. National Geographic explorers never lose that curiosity, and it has lead to some of the most remarkable discoveries in the last 125 years.

              Comments about Programmable Robot Rover:

After reading reviews on this product, several that stated the product never worked, even brand-new and right of out the box, I, against my better judgement, purchased it anyway.

We opened the box, installed batteries and nada. Not a noise, light or anything else that showed this thing had any life to it. We tried a second set of new batteries and the same thing, zilch.

A word to the wise, trust the reviews you are reading. This doesn't seem to be an issue with one dud out of thousands produced. I believe there are at least three reviews on this site, out of only a handful, that have gotten a toy that never worked, right out of the box.

Hopefully the return and refund process is easy. Good luck!

                            Comments about Programmable Robot Rover:

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my grandson Charlie, age 9. He is a whiz at building his own robots, is savvy about computers, & I thought he'd like this one. I just learned from his mother that the robot did not work at all. After much effort (both Charlie's parents have PhDs in science areas), they finally got the robot to move forward an inch at a time, intermittently, but that was the extent of its performance. I have never paid this much for a Christmas toy, but can't return it because it is in Portland OR and I am in Iowa...and after this much time, I have discarded the receipt. (I've learned from that.) Be warned.

The Robot was defective, a complete waste of time and money and a disappointment all around.

This tough little robot is easy to build in less than an hour, and just one motor powers three complex motions. His “angry” walk is giggle-worthy, but if he falls over, he’ll pick himself right up and keep on stomping. He can also dance and do somersaults. A huge hit at Tokyo’s massive International Robot Exhibition, this pint-size robot kit is a great introduction to gears and motors.

There is more to this little robot than meets the eye! This solar-powered robot lets budding green energy pioneers and robotic engineers build a range of silly creatures and traveling vehicles. Sort all the kit parts into the labeled baggies to make each build a breeze. And then start by building the drive box, aka the robot’s “head.” Kids can build one robot and easily change to another, zipping from turtle-bots to boat-bots, slither-bots to zombie-bots. With two skill levels, builders begin with amusing creatures and then challenge themselves with more complex robotic forms.

When the NASA rovers Spirit and Opportunity touched down on Mars in 2004, they weren't expected to last long—perhaps 90 days, or six months at most. But 90 days stretched into five years, and a short-term science mission searching for evidence of water has turned into one of the greatest adventures of the Space Age. The rovers have trekked miles across hostile plains, climbed mountains, ventured in and out of deep craters, survived dust storms and mechanical failures, and cheated death so often that no one will venture a guess as to how much longer they might last.
