Artist Richard Morgan hand-carves this charming bobwhite quail and chick in his Connecticut studio, with antique decoys as his inspiration. The New York Times called Morgan “one of the nation’s best-known decoy carvers.” Named for the sound of their distinctive whistle, these secretive birds are found all over the U.S. Although bobwhites are a solitary species, family groups called coveys can be spotted during late summer roosts.

Hand-carved in the U.S. 6"W x 5"H x 3"D.

For more than 30 years, Richard Morgan has one of the most well-known bird decoy carvers. Working from his Connecticut studio, he carves up to 8,000 decoys a year according to a 1999 profile in the New York Times. He observes birds in the wild and works from memory to create his signature works of art.

Comments about Hand-carved Bobwhite Quail and Chick:

I've had my eye on this piece for a while. It was hard for me to justify spending full price, but when it went on sale I could not resist!
Our Craftsman-style home is decorated with predominately nature inspired items - handmade preferred. The bobwhite quail and chick are a great addition to the carved bird collection on the mantle. They are a pleasant reminder of the bobwhites that still can be seen and heard out east.
It is signed by the artist Richard Morgan on the bottom and would make a great gift for nature and bird lovers.

In China, seal carving is such a revered skill that it's regarded as one of the "four treasured arts," along with painting, calligraphy, and poetry. Seals, also called chops, are used to sign everything from official documents to works of art. Often topped with elaborate carved motifs, the "name" end is dipped in brilliant red seal paste and stamped onto the paper.

Evoke the creative spirit of Rajasthan, India, with this colorful decorative truck crafted from reclaimed mango wood. In India, where some drivers refer to their truck as beta or beti (son or daughter), this penchant for personalization has become a bona fide art form. Drivers spend hours decorating their trucks with calligraphy and elaborate floral patterns. This rustic accent piece is a miniature version of the vibrant vehicles that add so much color to Indian roads.

The three elegant portraits that decorate our Victorian-inspired pin are hand-carved in the southern Italian town of Caserta, near Naples. Artisans use the pink and ivory of the conch shell, delicately carving away the outer layer of the shell to shape a young woman’s profile. Cameos became popular souvenirs for English tourists visiting the newly rediscovered ruins of Pompeii during the Elizabethan era. This inviting bedding begins as lengths of crisp cotton fabric, laid smooth along a wooden table. Artisans take hand-carved wooden blocks, dip them in indigo-hued dye, and stamp the elaborate pattern one block at a time. It takes up to nine separate blocks to create the multi-layered design. Many of the artisans who work on these pieces own family farms and return to their village during planting and harvest seasons.
