Along with the breathtaking landscape, the mountainous Kashmir region is world-renowned for its master weavers. Local artisans evoke the region's inspirational gardens in this traditional multicolor wool shawl. Swirling floral patterns decorate a background of earthy colors and surround a central field of semisheer black wool.

Please note: This shawl has been one of our biggest photography challenges. Although we rephotographed and color-corrected it for our print catalog, we appreciate that some customers have been disappointed by the discrepancy between the shawl as pictured and how it looks when worn. We updated the photography again in January 2013 for improved color accuracy and revised our online copy, and we plan to photograph the shawl on a model as soon as possible to better illustrate how the black area of the fabric looks when it's worn across one's shoulders. For additional questions, please contact our customer service department at 1-800-437-5521.

Comes in an organza gift bag. 100% wool. Dry clean. Made by artisans in India. Approximately 29"W x 84"L.

I had read the other reviews, so I wasn't at all surprised when the actual colors had very little to do with the picture. The colors were different and much more muted than as depicted. Had I not read the reviews, I would have been very dissapointed. As it was, I knew what to expect and was very pleased.

The design is lovely and the weight is nice (not too bulky) but.....I was extremely disappointed with the colours. The photo is about 50% to 70% brighter than the actual scarf (i.e. the green is really a dark dull olive colour and not the nice green in the photo) There are huge sections of plain black which is not really shown in the photo and the colours are not just darker but much more greyed. Not sure why the misrepresentation by NG. Too much hassle to send back so I will keep it.

            Comments about Himalayan Heirloom Shawl:

A beautiful color palette means this can be folded to accent the other colors you are wearing. It smelled pretty bad but I washed it in scented moisturizing shower wash (great for woolens) and hung it to dry, and now it smells quite nice.

                  Comments about Himalayan Heirloom Shawl:

The picture in the catalog is beautiful, a light tan color, almost sand colored in places. When it arrived, I was so disappointed to see a very, very dark shawl with no bright highlights. I could not wear this dark color. The quality of the shawl was good and the fabric of good quality.
                  I am returning it.

                        Comments about Himalayan Heirloom Shawl:

After reading the comments, I really hesitated to buy this shawl. But the price was so good I couldn't resist.
When it arrived, I was delighted. The colors are beautiful, even prettier than the photograph. Black predominates but it has nice bright colors to add interest. The design is WOVEN, not printed on. It is wonderful under or over a jacket or coat, it's light weight and easy to carry and wear. In a pinch, you can put it over your head to keep off rain or snow.
I work as a photo-journalist in criminal courts every day, and the room temperatures are very unpredictable. This shawl is the prefect thing to carry with me. If the room is especially chilly, I can double it and pull it close; wear it loose for average warmth, and if I don't need it I can fold it and put it in my bag.
And it's also beautiful for an evening out.

                        Comments about Himalayan Heirloom Shawl:

This shawl has a somewhat chemical smell to it, so it's now hanging to air out the odor. The material is thinner than I expected, so I will reserve it for warm weather use when I just need a little something on cooler evenings or in the office. Overall, I like it. I'm a big girl, and it's plenty long and wide enough to go around me and then toss over the shoulder, too.

Alpaca wool was originally reserved for Inca royalty because of its incredible softness and warmth. Today, a group of native artisans weaves this smooth, ample alpaca shawl using rustic hand looms and the same methods as their ancestors. The flowing, silky macramé fringe is knotted by hand in the tradition of the sophisticated wraps worn by indigenous Bolivian women.

Centuries ago, Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic cultures met and mingled in Kashmir as artisans from Central Asia and Iran settled in the area. One of the many exquisite arts for which this area is known is the intricate chain stitch called ari, which served as the inspiration for our timeless 100% merino wool shawl.

In the 19th century, paisley shawls from Kashmir were the height of fashion. European designers created their own Kashmir-inspired patterns, and this versatile knit shawl continues that trend. It’s a perfect, packable layer to dress up an outfit and stay warm while traveling.

Kashmir has been at the crossroads of Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic culture for centuries, as people from Iran and Central Asia settled in the area. Today, India, China, and Pakistan all claim some part of this mountainous region. Our black embroidered wool shawl is inspired by one of Kashmir’s most widely prized traditions, the intricately woven paisley shawls that were first traded with Europe via the Silk Road.

Neat rows of flowers line the garden paths at Kolkata’s Agri Horticultural Society. Home to thousands of plants and flowers, it was founded in 1820 by a prominent English missionary. Our chocolate brown and mint green wool shawl is inspired by Agri’s neat rows of flower beds and greenhouses. The addition of polka dots puts a contemporary twist on the collection of coordinating patterns.

In just a century since they first appeared, the textured wool sweaters of the Aran Islands have become “as tenacious an international symbol of Ireland as the harp and shamrock,” writes fashion historian Deirdre McQuillan. It wasn’t until the home crafts movement at the end of the 19th century that Aran’s distinctive patterns became known around the world. Today, from tourist shops to fashion shows, one can find sweaters based on stitches that were invented by grandmothers and great-grandmothers only a few generations ago.

In Tibet, turquoise (called gyu) and coral are two of the most highly valued materials. Turquoise has been used as currency, and coral is a precious trade object in this landlocked mountainous country. Nomadic people of the region frequently wear many pieces of turquoise and coral jewelry at once, as spiritual protection and as a way to keep their wealth at hand. By pairing faux versions of these stones with carnelian and handmade nickel and silver-plated beads, jewelers living on the Tibetan/Indian border re-create this traditional Himalayan design.

When Kashmiri shawls first came to Europe from India in the 18th century, they were a perfect complement to women’s simple, neoclassic dress styles. A century later, large paisley patterns in neon colors were a hallmark of 1960s fashion. Our hand-printed silk scarf blends these two Western paisley crazes with a traditional pattern rendered in bright hues that evoke stained glass.

Cable knit for safety in the waters. Diamonds for fishing nets. Honeycomb pattern for industriousness. Women on Ireland’s craggy Aran Islands have always knit sweaters for their fishermen kin, but in the early 20th century these enterprising crafters began selling them to travelers, and the vast vocabulary of stitches took on symbolic meanings. Our Aran-style pullover is made in Ireland of 100% merino wool and features an inviting shawl collar.

For centuries, Buddhist monks have used the haunting sounds of the Himalayan singing bowl in meditation. By holding the bowl in one hand and tracing its rim with the mallet, the bowl vibrates to create a sustained bell-like sound. It can also be hit with the mallet like a gong.
