By 1800, New England was the center of the world's whaling industry. Sailors spent long months at sea, and one of the ways they passed the time was creating scrimshaw—etched bones or tusks that were blackened with soot or tobacco to highlight the design. This contemporary scrimshaw box is made of water buffalo bone and reproduces a design that a sailor may have made for his sweetheart at home.

        Comments about Scrimshaw Whale Box:

I order this whale scrimshawed box for my father for a Christmas gift. He is a big fan of nautical scrimshaw items so when I saw this in the Nat. Geo. catalog I ordered it without hesitation. I recieved the box in the mail a week later. I unwrapped the box so I could rewrap it for Christmas and add a special note inside. Imagine my dissapointment when I discovered the box was blank white with no scrimshaw engraving of any kind. I immediatly contacted costomer service. They confirmed I had ordered the scrimshaw box. They offered to send me another box stating it must have been a production error. Sadly, having to have a replacement box sent from their warehouse means my Dad will not get to open his Christmas present from his daughter with the rest of his family.
I expected better service from a company I've help support for many years.

        Comments about Scrimshaw Whale Box:

I collect boxes, and use them to stash my costume jewelry. This is a lovely and well-made addition to my collection. There are those who complain that this box is 'too small' - even though the dimensions are given in the product description. Rather, I'd say that the price is too large for the box. It would also be nice if this box came in several size versions. Other than that I am very satisfied.

This was a gift for my father, who is a collector of whaling books and artifacts. He's delighted with the box. The box is heavy and nicely-lined, and is suitable as a men's valet box.

Sailors on whaling ships in the 18th century were usually at sea for a year or more. Many developed hobbies and practiced crafts to pass the long hour, often making presents for sweethearts and family at home. One of the most iconic “souvenirs” from these arduous voyages is scrimshaw, the name given to intricate etchings on whale teeth and bone, as well as walrus tusks. The etchings were darkened with soot or tobacco to highlight the design.

Over the course of their 70-year lifespan, sperm whales will easily travel the circumference of the Earth in search of food and the need to breed and find a mate. Males will travel as far north as the Bering Sea and as far south as Antarctica in order to find enough food to sustain their ways of live—up to 700 squid a day! Along the way, these massive beasts battle 30-feet-long giant squids, and each other, to sustain their ways of life.

After hunting whales for generations, we have brought their widespread slaughter to an end, but these graceful giants still face threats on a number of fronts, and the battle to save them goes on.

The art of reverse painting on glass was brought to Peru by settling Spaniards in the 15th century. Local artisans emulated the style found on mirrors and other Spanish household objects and, in time, added so much of their own inspiration that the technique became recognized as a Peruvian craft tradition. There are a dwindling number of Peruvian artists who still practice this unique and romantic art. Here the artisan captures the ethereal beauty of butterflies on the hinged lid of a handcrafted wooden jewelry box.

Popular during the Spanish colonial era in Peru, the art of reverse-glass painting dwindled until local artisans rediscovered it in the 1960s. Designs are painted on the back of glass—first the details and outlines, then highlights, then the background. Glass panels decorated with swirling floral motifs adorn this petite gold-painted wooden jewelry box.

Off the coast of San Francisco, an unexpected killing challenged the great white shark's supremacy as the ultimate predator when one became prey to a killer whale. Whale-watchers witnessed a stunning act of nature as a killer whale rose to the water's surface with a great white in its mouth and held it there for 15 minutes. Even more amazing, biologist Peter Pyle was nearby and able to get underwater footage of two whales feeding on the shark. They ate the liver and then departed the scene, leaving the rest to the birds. The incident raised questions, such as how did the killer whale take the huge shark without a struggle? And why did the whales only eat the shark's liver?
