In Kenya, those who work in the informal sector—small farmers, mechanics, and artisans for example—are known as jua kali, a Swahili word that means “hot sun.” About 70 percent of the country’s workforce are jua kali, and until recently they had limited access to training, business loans, or connections to larger markets for their goods. The artisans who made these hand-carved napkin rings are part of that sector, and their partnership with National Geographic is the result of recent initiatives to support and grow independent businesses.

Men and women of the eastern Kenya’s Kamba tribe work in a studio in Nairobi’s Gikomba neighborhood, where the income they earn often goes toward their children’s tuition costs. Traditionally men carve and sand the pieces, and women paint and polish them. Many of the artisans work alongside cousins and siblings, and the atmosphere is one of a close-knit family.

Each set contains a zebra, giraffe, elephant, and leopard. Please allow for small variations in each handcrafted piece.

Approximately 1"W x 3 1/4"L x 2 1/4"H.

Olive-wood carving has been an important craft among the Christian Palestinian community in Bethlehem since Greek Orthodox monks first started the tradition in the fourth century. Nativity sets like this one are popular souvenirs for Christians who make the Christmas pilgrimage. Branches from pruned olive trees are dried for almost a year, then sliced into mosaic-like pieces and hand-carved into this charming and rustic 12-piece Nativity scene. A music box plays “Silent Night.” Handcrafted at a 133-year-old family-owned studio in Bethlehem.

Cloisonné was developed thousands of years ago during the Byzantine era and traveled via the Silk Road to China, where it has flourished as an art form ever since. To create a design in cloisonné, an artist's original sketch must be traced using thin strips of wire. Into this wire "scaffolding" is inserted powdered enamel that, when baked, fills the outlines and creates a porcelain-like appearance.

Although signal flags have been largely replaced by two-way radio and cell phones, in the 19th century they were how ships at sea communicated with each other. Each flag stands for a letter, but also represents a full message. For example, the “T” flag also meant “keep clear!” Today the flags are reserved for yacht racing and formal occasions. Choose your three-initial monogram and artisans in New England will create a coaster set on cork-backed, rustic tumbled marble that shows your initials along with the corresponding signal flags.

Early in the 20th century, people discovered how to induce the transformation of a grain of sand into an organic gem, the pearl. Since that time, the natural irregularities of baroque cultured pearls have been treasured by women all over the world. These cultured freshwater pearls are available in four jewel tones of bronze, garnet, peacock, and amethyst and are strung on generous elastic. Read more about pearls in the June 1997 National Geographic. Set of four contains one bracelet in each color.
