This delicate cuff bracelet reflects a long tradition of Indonesian metalwork. Two-tone sterling silver with 18-karat gold plate is accented with faceted, deep red garnet stones. The simple filigree pattern is inspired by the profusion of flowers used in Indonesian weddings and other ceremonies.

Handcrafted in Indonesia. 1/2"W x 6"L.

The fiery red gemstone of January, garnet actually describes a range of stones and colors. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all considered it the traveler's stone for the belief that it could protect the wearer from evil. Although some of the most striking examples are found in Africa, garnet from Bohemia was much in demand during the 18th century, when designs often featured many small stones set in clusters like pomegranate seeds. Today artisans in jewelry-making centers in India, Indonesia, Russia, and elsewhere use garnet—fiery red, earthen brown, and even a brilliant green favored by Tiffany and Fabergé—to create vintage- and ethnically inspired new designs.

Mongolian-style filigree is a laborious, delicate jeweler's art whose lineage includes Faberge eggs and the trousseaux of Qing dynasty empresses. Few artisans in China remain who can achieve this level of precise detail, but by adapting these time-honored techniques for modern tastes, craftsmen are able to continue making a living through this ancient art. Here, colorful faceted amethyst and peridot alternate within links of high-gloss enamel and intricate 24-karat gold-vermeil filigree to create an accent fit for a queen. Handmade in China.

This handsome handcrafted bracelet combines traditional Eastern medicine with one of the most significant mantras in Buddhism for an accent that is as meaningful as it is beautiful. Saying, or even reading, the words Om mani padme hum is believed to invoke the Buddha of Compassion, called Avalokitesvara in Sanskrit or Chenrezig in Tibetan. Some traditions within Eastern medicine use copper and brass for their purported power to alleviate arthritis and increase circulation. These two beliefs intertwine in a hand-hammered copper, brass, and white metal cuff. The Tibetan script for Om mani padme hum is overlaid on the face of the bracelet.
