The art nouveau movement of the early 20th century was inspired by nature, Eastern art and design, and a desire to create objects that were both beautiful and functional. This glowing stained-glass tortoise lamp with a brass-finished base is made in the tradition of classic art glass from the 1910s. Chinese mythology tells that the tortoise is one of four creatures who rule the corners of heaven, where it represents strength, longevity, and endurance.

15-watt bulb, included. 9"L.

Comments about Art Nouveau-inspired Turtle Lamp:

I gave this as a gift to my twelve-year old grandson who shares my affection for turtles. With care I can see him taking it with him to college, as a memento of home. I can even foresee him having it admired by his own grandson someday, and telling the story of how his grandmother gave it to him. It has enough quality and sturdiness to become an heirloom to be passed down. The only caveat is that the shell part is made of glass and would break if mishandled.

Comments about Art Nouveau-inspired Turtle Lamp:

I worried that this turtle would look too "fake." In fact, it is perfect and is so attractive that we bought one for our son for his apartment. The glow from the light is warm and inviting and the turtle has become a friendly addition to our dining room.

Renaissance meets Art Nouveau in these pearl and gemstone earrings. Art Nouveau flourished in Europe during the turn of the 20th century. Its streamlined, geometric shapes influenced everything from advertising to architecture, furniture to fashion. In Rome, an architect named Gino Coppede designed an entire neighborhood in the Art Nouveau style, right down to the street lamps. The "Quartiere Coppede" still looks much as it did when the architect died in 1927.

In the early decades of the 20th century, art nouveau gave jewelers the opportunity to express themselves as artists. They drew inspiration from the natural world, especially the shapes of leaves and petals. These lightweight accents are stamped using 100-year-old molds from the art nouveau era. Made in France from “old silver,” or silver-plated copper, with blue Swarovski crystals.

The flowing hair and robes in the women in Alphonse Mucha's paintings, the celebrated entrances of the Paris Métro, and the stained glass of Louis Comfort Tiffany are all icons of Art Nouveau. This artistic style was popular at the turn of the 20th century and was inspired by natural shapes, such as flowers, plants, seashells. In Germany Art Nouveau was known as Jugendstil, "youth style," after the magazine that popularized the style.

A cluster of rich gems makes a romantic accent in these Art Nouveau-inspired earrings. Jewelers in the seaside town of Torre del Greco combine cultured pearls, rubies, emeralds, carnelian, and agate in a sweeping arrangement. A pink resin rosette adds an old-fashioned touch. The gems are all set in 14-karat gold-plated sterling silver bezels.

Since the Renaissance period, Italian art and design has been known for both its elegance and its playful sensibility. In the 1960s and ’70s, many Italian artists and designers found inspiration in expressionist and avant-garde painters like Paul Klee. This art historically inspired, hand-painted top draws the color palette of the 15th century into conversation with 20th-century abstraction. The result is a contemporary and easy-to-wear floral blouse in a rich olive green. With a cowl neck and an asymmetrical lace bottom, this piece will take you from day to night and back again.

Rome's ancient history is a constant source of inspiration at the family-run workshop where our bronze lamp is crafted. Working from sketches of artifacts, the designers sculpt a wax model in precise detail. The model is encased in clay, and then the clay is based, the wax melts, leaving a perfect mold. They pour molten bronze into the mold to create a perfect replica, which they finish with a verdigris patina.

Our cotton twill vest from Schott is inspired by the Air Force’s C1 survival vest, first issued in 1944. It contained essential gear, like flares and fishing kits, for pilots who had to ditch behind enemy lines. Unlike the bulky backpack survival kits it replaced, the C1 allowed items to be evenly distributed throughout pockets for maximum comfort and maneuverability—assets that are just as important for today’s traveler. The original C1 was one-size-fits-all, but ours is adjustable thanks to two back straps. Nine exterior pockets and two interior passport pockets.

Most of us wouldn’t dream of traveling—or even taking a day trip—without bringing a camera along. Photographs not only let us share our experiences with others, but they preserve once-in-a-lifetime moments, breathtaking sights, and visits with friends and loved ones precisely the way we want to remember them.

The Seguso family of Murano, Italy, has been listed in that city’s census of master glassblowers since the 1300s. In 1954 Sao Paulo invited Mario Seguso to create commemorative art glass for its 400th anniversary. He became so enchanted with the country that he moved there, where his sons continue the family tradition. This substantial Murano glass vase is inspired by the colorful energy of Carnival in the Segusos’ adopted country.
