1 1/2"L

One of the most striking members of the quartz family, violet hued amethyst has a place in traditions and beliefs of cultures from ancient Israel to modern day Tibet. Ancient Greek folk belief held that if one drank wine from an amethyst cup, it would prevent intoxication, and in many cultures it represents purity, clarity of mind, and chastity. A favorite of royalty, England's early 18th-century Queen Charlotte had a world famous amethyst bracelet and Russian empress Catherine the Great employed thousands of miners to extract the gem from Russia's Ural Mountains, which still yields some of the finest examples. In Tibetan Buddhism, amethyst rosaries are believed to enhance focus and inspire clear-sighted intelligence, an essential state of mind for those pursuing enlightenment.

Comments about Newar Amethyst Earrings:

Eaarings were not the ones shown in picture. They are actually pieces from the necklace, turned into earrings. I examined them closely, and compared them to the photo, and they definately are the stones and design shape of the "links" in the necklace. I am highly disaapointed and will be returning. Nothing on the earrings stated they were sterling silver (there were no stamps, etc.)

      Comments about Newar Amethyst Earrings:

Earrings looked nothing like the photo. Stones were a different shape, and the clasps were different. Stones had fingerprints on them. Nothing on them indicated they were sterling silver (no stamp, etc.) Packaging was nothing special. Very disappointed, and will not be buying from NG again (this was my first NG purcahse). I bought these as a Christmas gift, but must return them. I called the NG customer service (which they state is open 24/7). I waited on hold listening to obnoxious music for 30 minutes, then gave up.

Venetian explorer and trader Marco Polo was one of the first Westerners to travel the Silk Road, bringing European goods to Asia and returning with, among other things, precious gems. Here, the journey is embodied in garnet, peridot, amethyst, and granulated 24-k gold vermeil. Renaissance designer Benvenuto Cellini's work for the Medici family is adapted by Chinese jewelers using faceted gems mined in India—true fusion of three cultures. Charleston, South Carolina, is a veritable outdoor ironwork museum, with its pedestrian-friendly streets and a tradition of cast-iron and wrought-iron gates, fences, and balconies that date back to the early 18th century. British styles were the earliest to take hold in the city, but a local style soon evolved and gained national attention, with elements that were influenced by German ironworkers and the neoclassical design that was popular in architecture of the 19th century.

A small group of Balinese artisans collaborate on the tiny granulated designs on these medallion earrings. Each is handcrafted from sterling silver and paired with a smooth onxy cabochon.
